Work center fails to renew Miller's contract

Rutherford County’s Correctional Work Center superintendent Alan Miller lost his job Monday after the center’s board failed to renew his two-year contract.

County Mayor Ernest Burgess said the board voted unanimously not to reappoint Miller to supervise the correctional facility with 220 to 250 inmates.

“There were no reasons spelled out,” Burgess said.

Miller served almost 12 years at the superintendent.

“I don’t think it was unexpected and he handled it respectfully,” Burgess said.

Sheriff’s Lt. Bernard Salandy was appointed interim superintendent until the board reviews the job description and hires a fulltime superintendent by April 1. Salandy may apply as superintendent.

During the October board meeting, Burgess cited a list of “pervasive” violations occurring at the work center under Miller’s leadership, including nepotism, misuse of county property, fraternization with inmates and violation of safety rules.

“I’m really convinced we don’t have the proper leadership and supervision in place,” Burgess told the board, later saying, “We’re going to have to take affirmative action. We’re at risk.”

Miller asked the board to investigate before rushing into a decision.

“I’m not willing to be the victim of something I believe has been contrived to make me look bad,” Miller said.

Miller could not be reached for comment but attorney Brad Hornsby, who represents Miller, said his client was upset and disheartened because he never had a chance to rebut the allegations.

“We were never provided a list of any complaints by the county mayor,” Hornsby said. “What we read in the newspaper could have easily been rebutted.”

For example, one complaint centered on Miller allegedly taking a trip to Colorado with a women employee to look at a correctional center there.

“He took the trip with two females to Colorado to examine another work facility,” Hornsby said. “If this was two guys that went with him, this issue never would have been raised.”

Hornsby said Burgess is making it difficult to hire women and not have allegations made because a man is doing his job with a woman employee.

State law mandates the superintendent will be named on the first Monday of each even year so he believes the board named Salandy as a permanent superintendent because there’s no exception for an interim.

Commissioner Gary Farley, who chairs the Public Safety Committee, said he would leave comment to the board because Miller worked for them.

Does the board NEED a reason NOT to renew his contract? Wonder why he hired an attorney? Well we know why - he is hoping out milktoast commissioners will agree to some out of court settlement if he agrees to just go away.

When the man says he doesn't like someone, the "Good 'ole Boy Network" will remove him. All I ask is please don't waste our money with a "national search" like the boro council and school board only to pick a local person.

You have that right Macgyver - Burgess knows all about the "Good 'ole Boy Network" If you aren't in his "click" you lose your job....

Its sad in these times to see anyone lose their job, but this has been a long time coming. I know from personal experience that Mr. Miller has not been the professional he claims to be and it is definitely a positive change for Rutherford County Correctional Center to be rid of him and his issues.

I understand the sheriff has been wanting to take over the workhouse for years. I guess to expand his political powerbase.

The employee knew the terms of his contract. He might disagree with not getting renewed, but nothing illegal occured here.

I worked closely with Alan Miller for many years through another county department. I NEVER saw or heard Alan Miller do/say anything inappropriate. I watched him interect with employees, inmates and the general public.

It is disheartening to think that male and female co-workers can not conduct regular business without rumors being spread.

Allan Miller was a good Murfreesboro police Officer and Detective. He is a good man. He fraternizes with the inmates at certain times, yes. But only when he walks through and sees someone he knows But, the workhouse is a place for misdemeanor offenses! If you have ever had a felony or notorious crime, you are ineligible for the work house. Mostly violations of probation from Murfreesboro's fine Providence Community Corrections money making scheme are in the workhouse. They have not been arrested for crimes but arrested because they had to work to make the money to get off probation and couldn't take off to go to the probation office to report in without losing thei'r jobs. For an officer or a superintendent to give a smile or talk a second to them make them a lot more at ease and it's less likely they give them a problem in the long run. They want to make the workhouse like the jail. As for him misusing funds, I don't believe it. Allan is an honest man and would not do things like this, as well as he would not conduct himself in an uncivilized manner towards a female officer. Someone asked for the job, and they got it while brown nosing someone in the committee. This is exactly what happened. It's all who you know in Rutherford County. It's already become more like the jail. I have known Mr. Miller since he was coming to Oakland high School for carreer day with old Singleton, another good man. I hung out with them back then, and I will stand by them today.

I've known Mr. Miller for many years and concur that he is a very good person of great character. He's been very compassionate yet professional with the inmates. He's been nothing but a victim of good ole boy politics (Burgess)and a former employee that made false accusations simply because he didn't get a promotion. I'd stand by Mr. Miller anywhere. This action was the County's loss as well as it's citizens. I can't wait for election time Mr. Burgess.
