The Middle Tennessee women’s tennis program, led by head coach Shelley Godwin, has announced the addition of Chelsea Stump to the staff as the Blue Raiders’ assistant coach.
“I am so honored to be a part of Middle Tennessee and the women’s tennis program,” Stump said. “The welcome I have received from Shelley, the players and the rest of the MT staff so far has been both warm and appreciated. Shelley has been wonderful in helping me adjust to the position and I have already gleaned an abundance of knowledge from working under her so far. The team has started the season strong and I am thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the legacy that is being created.”
Stump joined the Middle Tennessee program at the beginning of the semester after completing pre-nursing classes at the State College of Florida in Bradenton, Fla., in December. A Bradenton native, she attended Flagler College in St. Augustine, Fla., where she was a four-year member of the Saint tennis team.
“We are excited to have Chelsea join us this spring,” Godwin said. “She brings a great work ethic and valuable experience that will help our program move in the right direction.”
At Flagler, she was a 2010 Academic All-Peach Belt First Team honoree, becoming the first player in school history to earn the accolade. Stump finished her senior campaign with a 15-4 singles record, including an 8-2 mark in Peach Belt action, while adding a 17-5 doubles ledger and leading the Saints to a No. 17 ranking in the final ITA Division II national poll and No. 5 listing in the Southeast Region.
She received the Athletic Director’s Award for senior athlete with the highest GPA and was picked as the 2010 Nancy E. Rutland Endowed Scholarship recipient.
In addition, she was nominated for the State Athletic Award, as only one female senior student-athlete was chosen per school and was a member of the Dean’s List each semester.
Stump interned with InterVarsity, a common ground leadership team at Flagler, in Fall 2010, and was a member of the Flagler chapter from 2008-11.
She graduated in 2011 with a 3.72 GPA and as a double major of psychology and philosophy and religion, with a concentration in religion. In the summer of 2009, Stump studied abroad in Italy.
Prior to arriving on the Flagler campus, she attended Bradenton Prep High School, where she was a member of the tennis team which won the 2007 state title and she was presented with the Coaches’ Choice Award. She graduated with a 3.7 GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society.
From 2004-07, she attended IMG Academies as a tennis player and has been very active with various church groups, including a 2006 mission trip to Grenada.
