Woman shoots at boyfriend for 'peace and quiet'

TMP Reports

An irate woman who just wanted “some peace and quiet in her house” fired a handgun into the ground to scare her boyfriend who argued with her about money Friday, a sheriff’s deputy reported.

Boyfriend James Maynard of Woodcraft Drive reported his live-in girlfriend, Becky Lee Bess, 35, shot at him with a handgun, Deputy Mark Gregory reported. He sought help from a neighbor. Bess was found on the porch with a whiskey bottle in her hand.

“I then asked if she was armed with the handgun and she stated that she had put it up in the bedroom in the dresser drawer,” Gregory reported. “Ms. Bess admitted to shooting the handgun but stated she shot at the ground to scare Mr. Maynard away.”

They argued about money arrangements until she retrieved a .25-caliber semi-automatic handgun and fired it while intoxicated.

“Bess stated that she had been drinking and just wanted some peace and quiet in her house,” Gregory reported.

Gregory charged her with aggravated domestic assault and possession of a handgun while under the influence of an intoxicant.

Deputies seized the handgun loaded with six rounds and a tin can containing prescription hydrocodone, marijuana and rolling papers.

Her hearing was set Feb. 25 in General Sessions Court.

In another case, Cpl. Ryan Huggins reported a 14-year-old boy was accused of pulling a knife on his father in Christiana because the father told him he needed to go home.

“They began to argue and his son pulled a knife from his pocket and opened the blade,” Huggins reported.

The father wrestled the knife from his son. The father didn’t want to prosecute and agreed a Juvenile boot camp and counseling might be a better alternative.

His son was crying and apologetic.

“He stated his behavior and attitude were completely unnecessary and understood the severity of the crime he committed,” Huggins reported.
