Fire burned the lower half of a Murfreesboro woman’s body early Saturday at her West Street home, an assistant fire chief said.

The woman, whose name is not being released yet, was taken to Middle Tennessee Medical Center for treatment, said Assistant Chief Allen Swader. She may have been transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

“Upon arrival, there were flames coming out the front door of Apartment 732 West St.,” Swader said. “A female was severely burnt on the lower part of her body.”

Neighbor Charlie Sims pulled the woman from her burning home, the assistant fire chief said.

The woman’s husband is in the hospital on unrelated injuries and was not home. Firefighters contained the fire to one apartment in the triplex but two other families were displaced because the power was pulled from their homes.

Assistant Fire Marshal Nora Smith is investigating the cause of the fire.

The American Red Cross responded to help the families.
