Windrow claims Celebrity Spelling Bee trophy

Vincent Windrow accepts congratulations from Dr. Georgie Lien as the two finally end the spelling bee final round.
Vincent Windrow carefully and correctly spelled out “capricious” to win the 2009 Celebrity Spelling Bee Tuesday night at Patterson Park Community Center.

While the Mount Olive Baptist Church pastor and MTSU director claimed the Rebecca Jennings Trophy, adding his name to Katherine Stephens and Barb Ford’s on the cup, the real winner was Read to Succeed that raised more than $32,500 for the event.

Windrow outlasted Dr. George Lynn through several round after they made the final two.

Lynn misspelled “Bolshevik,” opening the door for Windrow who first spelled “alchemy” and then “capricious” for the title.

Former MTSU star and NFL quarterback Kelly Holcomb was third, going out on “furlough”; County Commissioner John Rodgers fourth (“macramé”); and Smyrna business owner and community volunteer Ginny Williams fifth (thesaurus”).

Making the final 10 were Angela Floyd, Melinda Hudgins, Mark Pirtle, Mark Sims and MTSU mascot Lightning.

Other Celebrity Spellers were Gloria Bonner, Angie Boyd-Chambers, Rob Lyons, Sidney McPhee, Lori Sain-Smith, and Ralph Vaughn.
