William George Cook was born in the Florence Community in Rutherford County Tennessee on October 2, 1930 to the late Esten Cook and Clara Mae Davis Cook.
He entered the Army Air Corp at age 17 in 1947, and gained the rank of Sergeant before being honorably discharged in 1951. Mr. Cook was extremely proud of this time in his life and served on the island of Guam where he gained experience through his involvement in building military air strips. Upon leaving the service, he immediately began working for McDowell McDowell Construction Company in October of 1951. Mr. Cook began his new career as a bulldozer operator but had earned the position of superintendent by the time he medically retired from this employment in 1980. He was involved in the construction of the interstate highway system of Tennessee, Alabama, and North Carolina. He also worked in Kentucky for a short period of time. George, as he was called by his friends and family, spent his remaining life in the country where he enjoyed spending time outdoors and taking care of his garden, pets, and cattle.
Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 16th, at Woodfin Chapel, Smyrna Tennessee. Services will be led by Reverend Dan Parker, Pastor of Parkway Baptist Church. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
William George Cook is survived by his wife of 61 years, Virginia Lee Francis Cook; and their children Janet S. Demastus and her husband David of McDonald, TN, Linda M. Hogue and her husband Hugh of Pelham, AL, and Donna K. Schutzenhofer and her husband Jeff of Aiken, SC.
He is also survived by a brother, Paul F. Cook and his wife Martha; five grandchildren, Jason D. Demastus, Melissa A. Hall and her husband Aaron, Hugh V. Hogue, Jr., Sarah M. Schutzenhofer, and Joshua E. Schutzenhofer; two great grandchildren, Anna Charlotte Hall and Eleanor Renee Hall, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ina Lee Harrell Wilson, and his brothers Thomas Clifford Cook, John A. Cook, James Cook, and Esten Cook, Jr. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Evan Daniel Demastus.
