Wheel Tax Officer can now pull anyone over anywhere

Rutherford County’s Wheel Tax officer can now enforce the law where ever he wants.

“The wheel tax officer was handcuffed to a degree,” Commissioner John Rodgers said.

So the county lobbied the Rutherford County legislative delegation to change state law to allow the wheel tax officer to pull cars over to check registrations on all the roads in the county. State law have prevented the officer from enforcing registration compliance on state-maintained raods.

“And the legislature obliged,” Rodgers said.

The county commission unanimously approved a resolution Thursday night accepting the change in state law in an effort to boost revenues from the wheel tax.

Another bill passed the House of Representatives earlier this week that would require drivers to show a license when renewing vehicle licenses.

Rutherford County also lobbied for this change to keep as much wheel tax revenue in the county as possible.

The commission also went into executive session to discuss a zoning lawsuit with the county attorney.

John and Kimberly Dolan filed suit against the county in 2007 when their request for a conditional-use permit to open a metal exchange center in Rockvale was denied.

Mark Scruggs, the Nashville-based attorney representing the Dolans, said Rutherford County’s zoning regulations are riddled with problems.

The Dolan’s request was met with strong opposition of the Rockvale community, which stood as the basis for the county’s denial for rezoning, Scruggs said in a previous interview.

Scruggs explained the Dolans met all the requirements set by the planning department and the permit should have been approved.

Thursday night the commission unanimously approved a motion to allow Mayor Ernest Burgess to negotiate with the Dolans and resolve the outstanding case.

Retired county employees will see an increase to their health care payments.

The commission also approved a 10-percent rate increase for pre-65 retirees under health care option 1 and a 7.5-percent rate increase for post-65 retirees.

One excuse for not enforcing the law out of the way.

Wheel Tax Officer? What is that?! Why would we need such and offical? Don't the police cite for those violations? Seems like a redundant posistion to me and another way to be hasseled by "law" enforcement officers. Next will be the Ice Cream Truck Officers...Beware!

I don't think that the police do enforce any kind of registration... get at any light in Murfreesboro and look around you!! Bet that you will find several expired tags... the whole thing is stupid. I have seen some that were over 2-year expired! How can that happen? If I see it, you know that the police do so why would they care if someone living in Murfreesboro registers their car in Franklin County where the expense is way cheaper??

Wheel Tax Officer becoming a lawman. Gee! I do agree that people who live in other counties should not be allowed to bring their children to Rutherford County schools unless they live in the county. This is well and good, but for a Wheel Tax Officer to stop everyone that comes into Rutherford County with out of County liscenses is just plain stupid. Guess these people will just have to go around the county to get where they are going now. LOL

I know this is going to sound incredibly naive, but if people were honest and followed the rules (gasp!), then we wouldn't be losing this tax revenue to other counties. Unfortunately, there could be some unintended consequence to passing this law (as mentioned by diddlede). It also feels redundant (per Trvlace). If people practiced integrity, then there are a lot of law enforcement jobs that could be eliminated. I hate paying taxes as much as anyone, but I pay them and so should everyone else who lives here.

As for the Dolan's, I think settling is the WRONG message to send. I remember watching this one on TV. If I remember right, when this guy was turned down for his permit, in retaliation to the Rockvale opposition - he spray painted his own building with obsenities. I apologize if I'm remembering a different applicant, but I think it was this guy.

We now have a county wheel tax Tax Nazi? What's next? The property Tax Nazi, The Sales Tax Nazi? Incredible. At the rate we're going, the county will have as many tax Nazis as Obama has Czars.

WHen the surrounding counties charge about half what we do for tags, thats a clear indication that we are charging to much. Raise taxes like that and people go elsewhere. Keep uping my property taxes and I will completley sell out. I have already sold one parcel of land for that reason. (tax went up 94% in one year on that parcel.)

The Wheel Tax Officer has been around f-o-r-e-v-e-r. He has always done an excellent job and continues to do so. He has MANY responsibilities and his position brings in money for the County. He is also the guy who tracks down the scum who dump their trash all over the county.

Do be so quick to be so dang negative!

Wth this extra authority, look for a request for an assistant, coming soon to your county commissioners. A new job being "stimulated!"

To confirm the info in my post simply contact the Rutherford County Mayor's Office (898-7745) and inquire as to how long this department has existed and the responsibilities of the department. You may then call the Rutherford County Finance office and inquire as to the current budget for this department and the amount of money this department contributes into the County General fund (898-7795). Or if you would like you may call the Wheel Tax Officer directly and ask him (494-9703).

F.Y.I.=this is the officer you see around town who drives the dark blue police car.

Iduke, please mention that a park ranger can stop you on any road if need to be. These guys are like state troopers. I have worked indirectly with the Wheel Tax Officer and I am sure he could confirm this information.

DDillion-

I don't know why you think I am the Wheel Tax Officer, but I'm not. Watch the Rutherford County Public Safety Committee on RCTV and you can see us both.

Enjoy the weekend.
