Discover Gaming @ LPLS LPLS's new gaming program series has begun! LPLS was awarded a $5000 Community Building Through Video Games in Libraries grant, which will be used to purchase video gaming equipment and offer programming at both the Linebaugh and Smyrna branches geared for teens (ages 12-18), seniors (ages 55 and older) and families (all ages). Programs are being presented in conjunction with the Rutherford County YMCA and the Smyrna Senior Center, with assistance by our Teen Advisory Board. Zine Workshop for Parents Hey moms (and dads)! Come explore your creative side next Saturday! Linebaugh Library and Artsy Mamas will present a zine workshop for parents (ages 18+) on September 12, 9 a.m. to noon. Join us for a free adventure in writing, drawing, collage, or other 2-D art -- no experience required. During this free workship, we'll learn about zines, see some examples, talk about how to make a zine, and work together to make a collaborative zine. At the end of the workshop, each participant will have a copy of the finished zine to take home with them, and a copy will be added to the library's zine collection. Green Driving Workshop Not trading in your clunker for cash? Green Driving Solutions owners Chris Gibson and Vicki Lewis will teach a green driving program that shows drivers how to increase fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, make their vehicles last longer, and save time and money on vehicle expenses. Gibson and Lewis will also discuss the "green tune-up" and "green oil changes." Gibson is an eco-mechanic with more than 15 years experience and has been converting diesels to biofuels for the past nine years. Green Driving Solutions recently created an instructional DVD called Fuel Saving Tips and Strategies; the Driving Habits segment of this DVD will be shown and a discussion of fuel efficiency will follow. This free workshop will be held at 11 a.m. on September 12; it is open to the public.
Soul of a People - Free Screening In the 1930s, in the grip of the Great Depression, Americans found financial relief through the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Now on the 75th anniversary of the New Deal, the Smithsonian Channel HD is proud to present Soul of a People: Writing America's Story, a fascinating real life film that documents one of the most chaotic and influential cultural experiments in American history: the Federal Writers Project. Soul of a People premiers on September 6 on the Smithsonian Channel HD. Linebaugh Library will offer a free local screening of the documentary at 1 p.m. on September 19 in the Story Room on the first floor. The 1 hour, 44 minute-long documentary will be shown in its entirety; free popcorn will be provided. Soul of a People programs in libraries are made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: great ideas brought to life, with support from the American Library Association Public Programs Office. The Soul of a People documentary was produced by Spark Media, Washington DC.
Friends Book Sale The Friends of Linebaugh Library Bookstore will be open 9 a.m. to noon on September 19. The bookstore is located at Linebaugh Library on Level 2 of the parking garage. The bookstore contains approximately 5,000-7,000 books roughly sorted by categories. Most hardcovers are $1.00 and paperbacks are $.50. Proceeds benefit Linebaugh Library's bookfund and library programming. A special preview sale, only for Friends members, will be held on September 12. (Not a Friends member? Join today!)
Reading Rally Join us for our annual Reading Rally, a midday festival to celebrate the written word, following a day of reading in all the schools in Rutherford County. This free festival will be held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on September 26 at Linebaugh Library, Smyrna Library, and LaVergne Library. We'll have visits from your favorite storybook characters, including Franklin the Turtle and Clifford the Big Red Dog, and other special guests, plus storytelling, music, activities for children, face painting, free snacks and $1 pizza, and door prizes.

New Holds Feature Plan to be out of town for a few days? You can now suspend your holds through our online catalog. Suspending your holds allows you to keep your place in line, but the hold won't become available until you're available to pick it up. After you enter your library card number, you can choose to edit some or all of your holds to enter suspension dates. You can also choose an expiration date for your holds -- if you will no longer need an item after a certain date, set that as your expiration. If the book becomes available for you before that date, you will be notified as normal. If not, the hold will automatically cancel.

Online Bookclubs & Newsletters LPLS is now offering a New DVDs Bookletter. Add it to your Bookletter selections, and you'll receive a monthly update on new and upcoming DVD selections at LPLS. You can also get Bookletters on Staff Pick Selections, Book Club Choices, Book of the Day reviews, and a wide variety of newsletters on fiction and nonfiction. Visit the library's website to sign up for these email newsletters, or receive Bookletters via RSS. LPLS also offers Online Bookclubs. Sign up and you'll receive a five-minute selection from a chapter of a book each day. By the end of the week, you'll have read 2-3 chapters. No matter what your reading interest, there's a book club for you!
