Winter Reading Program

Linebaugh Library invites all area teens and adults to earn prizes for the books they read this winter by participating in the Resolve to Read Winter Reading Program. This year's program features visits from authors Robert Hicks, Sherrilyn Kenyon, and J.T. Ellison, and prizes including gift cards to area restaurants and autographed books. Sign ups begin on January 11; the program runs through February 23.

Smyrna Library's Walter King Hoover Winter Reading Program features a visit from author Michael Lee West, with a grand prize of a Sony E-Reader Touch edition. Sign ups begin on January 19; the program runs through February 26.

Book Talk & Signing


Put an end to those cold winter blues... warm up with a good book! Sherrilyn Kenyon Book Talk & Signing Linebaugh Library will host author Sherrilyn Kenyon at 1 p.m. on Feb. 20. In the past two years, this New York Times bestselling author has claimed the #1 spot ten times. With more than 20 million copies of her books in print in over 30 countries, Kenyon's current series include the Dark-Hunters, Lords of Avalon, BAD Agency, and the forthcoming Nevermore and Chronicles of Nick. Her latest book isBorn of Ice, the third book in the League series. Other recent books by Kenyon include Night Pleasures and Dream Warrior. Publisher's Weekly has proclaimed her "the reigning queen of the paranormal scene." Following a talk about her books, Kenyon will also sign books; copies of her books will be available for purchase. This event is free and open to the public.

J.T. Ellison Book Talk & Signing

Linebaugh Library will host author J.T. Ellison at 7 p.m. on Feb. 23. Ellison is the bestselling author of the critically acclaimed Taylor Jackson series, including All the Pretty Girls, 14, and Judas Kiss. Her latest book, The Cold Room, will debut on February 23. Ellison, who lives in Nashville, has worked with the Metro Nashville Police Department, the FBI, and various other law enforcement organizations to research her books. She was named as Best Mystery/Thriller Writer of 2008 by the Nashville Scene. Ellison will discuss her latest thriller, followed by a book signing; copies of her books will be available for purchase. This event is free and open to the public.

NPT ScienceNOW

NPT ScienceNOW is a face to face, informal conversation with about current science topics. Each meeting is focused on an interesting, lively discussion led by an expert in the field. It’s about exchanging points of views and appreciating differences. It’s about learning and sharing science for all. Meetings will be held monthly at Linebaugh Library on the first Tuesday at noon. On Feb. 2, our topic will be The Science of Chocolate. Whether tackling how science can solve global problems or help us to understand how the universe works, these gatherings are NOT lectures. They are an opportunity for you to share your opinions, ideas and thoughts with other science lovers and to meet local scientists in a fun, casual setting. Bring a lunch and join us for this "Science Off the Shelf" series. This program series is co-sponsored by Nashville Public Television.

Gardening Series

LPLS's Gardening series is devoted to nature, gardening, plants, vegetables, and more. This year, the classes will rotate among the library branches each month. The next class will be held at Smyrna Library 10-11 a.m. on Feb. 20, when a Master Gardener will discuss issues related to spring planting. Participants should bring questions, a pencil and paper. Each month a Master Gardener from the area will discuss a different topic and answer gardening questions. All classes are free and open to the public.

Community Read One Book


Community Read challenges the readers of Rutherford County to join together each winter to read a chosen book, to encourage reading among adults, to unify our county through a shared experience, and to highlight an issue of importance. It is a collaboration of Read to Succeed, Linebaugh Library, Barnes & Noble, and Middle Tennessee State University to promote reading and literacy in Rutherford County. This year's selection is The Soloist by Steven Lopez. During the spring, Murfreesboro will host several events and activities for those who have read the book. Book Discussion Groups

Linebaugh Library offers several different book discussion groups. No matter what type of book you like to read or when you're available to meet, we've got you covered! Click on the group names below to see the books we'll be reading in 2010. Groups meet in the library's Board Room, on the second floor. Want a reminder of what our book clubs are reading each month? Sign up for our Book Club Picks email newsletter! The Afternoon Book Club meets at 2 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month. The Mystery Book Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Our Tuesday Book Discussion Group meets the third Tuesday of every month at 7:30 p.m. Our Lit Wits Book Club (formerly known as the Books We Love Club) meets on the third Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. The Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club will meet every fourth Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Find out more about us at our group's website!

Tax Forms


Employer forms (W2 and 1099) will be available starting Jan. 4, 2010 in the Reference Department at Linebaugh and Smyrna Libraries. Quantities will be very limited. Employers may order these forms at no charge from the IRS website. All other federal income tax forms and instructions will be available starting Jan. 19, 2010, or you can download them from IRS.gov. Tennessee state income tax forms will be available at the Linebaugh Reference Desk only.

The Richard Siegel Foundation

Linebaugh Public Library System will purchase two series of books that will help children progress in the challenge of reading. Made possible in part by a grant from The Richard Siegel Foundation, these high-quality books will help all children learn to read more easily, especially those with dyslexia. The books will include those appropriate for beginning readers in grades K-3 -- phonetically decodable beginning reading books that tell rich and engaging stories -- to books targeting children in upper elementary and junior high schools who display high interests in reading and low ability levels for their ages -- books with lower difficulty levels and age-appropriate subject matter, ranging from literary classics to contemporary themes.

Teen Tuesdays


The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is now sponsoring Teen Tuesdays. Teens are invited to come to the library on Tuesdays, 4:30-6:30 p.m., for a different activity each week, including video game tournaments, book clubs, crafts, and knitting projects. Visit our teens page for more information. Gaming @ the Library From August 2009 through Summer 2010, Linebaugh and Smyrna Libraries will offer a series of gaming programs geared for teens (ages 12-18), seniors (ages 55 and older) and families (all ages). These programs are being presented in partnership with the Rutherford County YMCA and the Smyrna Senior Center, with assistance from our Teen Advisory Board.

Smyrna Library's next program will be: Agatha Christie Mystery Week - January 28-29, 2-4 p.m., for seniors (ages 55+). Join us for group play sessions on Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None PC game. Participants will direct the game play by exploring the game environment, looking for clues, and solving the mystery. Copies of the book, as well as other Christie mysteries, will be available during the program. Also at Smyrna, Love Your Brain @ Your Library - February 13, 2:30 p.m., where you can choose from and play a variety of brain-building puzzle and trivia games, including Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree and The Price is Right. Friends Bookstore


The Friends of Linebaugh Library Bookstore will be open 9 a.m. to noon on Feb. 20. A special preview sale will be held for Friends members only on February 13, 10 a.m. to noon. The bookstore is located at Linebaugh Library on Level 2 of the Parking Garage. The bookstore contains approximately 15,000 books roughly sorted by categories. Most hardcovers are $1 and paperbacks are 50 cents. Proceeds benefit the Linebaugh Library's bookfund. (Not a Friends member? Join today!)

Genealogy Group

If you are interested in tracing your family roots or need tips on conducting your own genealogy research, please join Smyrna Library's new Genealogy Group. Starting Jan. 19, the Genealogy Group will meet at 1 p.m. on each Tuesday through February to discuss genealogy and how to trace your family's history. The group is open to everyone, from beginners to experts. The purpose of the group is to teach, share, and learn techniques for performing genealogical research. We will explore many of LPLS's numerous print genealogy resources, as well as online resources like Heritage Quest and Ancestry Online. This group is open to the public; no advance registration is required.

Art Workshops

Murfreesboro Parks & Recreation will present a series of art workshops, to be held at Linebaugh Library from 10:30 a.m. to noon the second Saturday of each month. The workshops are for ages 8 and up (adults, too!). Advance registration is required; space is limited. A $4 activity & supplies fee is due at the time of registration. Employee of the Month


Linebaugh Public Library System is pleased to announce Pete Wood has been named Employee of the Month for December. Wood is the Supervisor of Instructional Technology at Linebaugh Library, where he coordinates the computer classes and assists with the maintenance of the library's computer systems. He also assists at the Circulation Desk and helps library visitors using the computer labs. Wood was chosen by his coworkers for the honor because of the culmination of his efforts to introduce an RFID system at LPLS. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a technology for tracking materials belonging to the library. In November 2009, LPLS was awarded a grant from the Christy-Houston Foundation to implement RFID in 2010. Wood has been the point person in researching RFID, contacting vendors, compiling information, and communicating with staff. He has worked at Linebaugh Library for 7 years. The LPLS Employee of the Month is sponsored by Jeff’s Family Restaurant of Murfreesboro.

Bring Your Own Headphones


Starting Jan. 1, LPLS will no longer offer headphones in the libraries' public computer labs. LPLS is making this change because of the cost of replacing damaged headphones and because of public health concerns. Earbuds will be available to purchase for $1, or you can bring your own headphones.
