Read to Succeed Reading Rally

The sixth annual Reading Rally will take place simultaneously at the Smyrna, LaVergne, and Murfreesboro Linebaugh Libraries from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.

This celebration of the written word is a free, public family event. Musicians, storytellers, popular children’s characters, and readers will entertain.

Complimentary healthy snacks, book-related art projects, and door prizes to such local treats as Discovery Center, Bill Taylor’s Bushido School of Karate, and Hastings are available. Each site will also feature a physical challenge such as a Moon Walk.

The Heart of Tennessee Heart and Stroke Walk

Registered walkers will stride two miles through The Avenue during the American Heart Association Heart Walk at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Registration is at Embassy Suites.

Besides the walk, the event includes a Kid’s Zone with the inflatable bounce house and face painting. For adults, Middle Tennessee Medical Center will screen for body mass index and blood pressure. Total Family Rehabilitation will conduct nerve screenings.

AHA will recognize lifestyle change winners who lost 100 pounds and change their eating habits to healthier ones, Jackson said.

MTMC and Schneider Electric in Smyrna and La Vergne will receive Fit Friendly Company awards for providing opportunities for employees to get adequate exercise, encourage healthy eating options and build a culture of wellness.

Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk

The Alzheimer’s Association holds its annual Memory Walk starting at 8 a.m. Saturday in an effort to raise money and end the debilitating disease of Alzheimer’s.

The theme for this year’s walk is MOVE . . . We’re on the MOVE to End Alzheimer’s.

Purple End Alzheimer’s Bracelets are available for a donation of $3 at St. Clair Senior Center.

Campfire Concert series

Fall has returned and so has the Friday Campfire Concert series.

The Flatt Sisters are the featured musicians for Friday's Campfire Concert Series 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the General Bragg Trailhead on West College Street.

The Flatt Sisters perform three-part harmony on songs like Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and sing along to folk and gospel favorites. Some acapella, some accompanied. 

Come on out to listen around a glowing campfire, sing along and support this free, family-friendly program sponsored by Murfreesboro Parks & Recreation.

It’s a free event, and we will have soft drinks and make-your-own s’more fixings for sale. Bring lawn chairs and the whole family for an evening out.

Buchanan Elementary Harvest Festival

Buchanan Elementary holds its annual Harvest Festival Friday night from 3:30-7 p.m. at the school on Manchester Highway.

The family friendly event features food, games, inflatables and prizes.

30th Annual TACA Craft Fair

Tennessee Association of Craft Artists returns to Nashville’s Centennial Park this week.

The, 30th Annaual TACA Craft Fair runs from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday.

Salvation Army’s Center of Hope/Craft Fair and Farmers’ Market

The Salvation Army holds a craft fair and farmers’ market from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday in front of Salvation Army’s Center of Hope (corner of the New Salem Highway and West Main Street).

Local farmers and craftsmen will present their produce and products for sale during the event.

Theater

The Theater at Patterson Park, 521 Mercury Blvd., stages Honk! Junior, a modern retelling of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Ugly Duckling, specifically adapted for children from 8-14 years old.

Performances are at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Admission is $7.50 for adults and $6 for youth and seniors.

Lamplighter’s Theater presents The Music Man at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 4 p.m. Sunday at the Smyrna Assembly, 14119 Old Nashville Hwy.

MTSU School of Music concerts

The 38th season of the Middle Tennessee Choral Society opens with Orff's dramatic Carmina Burana at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday in MTSU's Wright Music Hall.

In addition, the Choral Society is joined by 100 voices from MTSU's Concert Chorale and an elite orchestra, all under the baton of Dr. Ralph Bundage. Also featured are solos by baritone John Kramer, sporano Hannah Smith and tenor Elliot Peterson.

Tickets will be available at the door at the door: $10 for adults; $9 for seniors age 65+; $8 for children under age 12; FREE for MTSU students. Phone 898-2849 for more information. 

Kittrell Volunteer Fire Department Country Ham Breakfast

Enjoy a country ham breakfast with all the fixin’s at the Kittrell Volunteer Fire Department, 8067 Old Woodbury Pk., at 6 a.m. Saturday.

All proceeds go to the Kittrell Volunteer Fire Department.

Plates are $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.

Clothing Giveaway and Preparedness Fair

Clothing Giveaway and Preparedness Fair takes places from from 9 a.m.-noon at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 902 E. Clark Blvd.

Babies, toddlers, children's clothes, teens, adult men, adult women, shoes and purses, coats, bedding will be available free of charge. Everything will go and anything left over will be donated to Goodwill.

The Preparedness Fair will begin at 10 a.m. Learn something new to prepare your family for troubling times.

Classes include: 1) Safe Water Storage, 2) 72-Hour Emergency Kit (featuring information from the Red Cross), 3) Using Long-Term Food Storage, 4) Family Finances and Getting Out of Debt (featuring information from Primerica Financial Services).
