Halloween Happenings

Get your goodies at the sixth annual Trick or Treat on the Square from 3-6 p.m. Halloween evening.

Merchants and offices welcome youngsters with some treats that are certain to please.

Shacklett’s Photography offers photographs of the little ghosties.

Enjoy mall-wide trick or treating and ghoulish Halloween fun at Stones River Mall at 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31. Plus, tour the kid-friendly haunted house, compliments of the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department.

The La Vergne Library’s children’s area will again feature Gross Grub, beginning at 3 p.m. Oct. 31 at the library, located at 5063 Murfreesboro Road in La Vergne.

Snacks such as “Kitty Litter Cake,” “Spider Web Pizza” and “Dirty Dishwater punch,” will be among the featured dishes at this year’s event.

Young people are encouraged to wear their costumes and stop by for food, fun and more.

The Center for the Arts welcomes a local ghost hunter who will regale visitors with his tales of the unnatural at the building located at 110 W. College St.

The free and open event is at 7:30 p.m. Halloween.

Oaklands Historic House Museum, 900 N. Maney Ave., explores Victorian mourning customs all October with Widows, Weepers and Wakes: Mourning Customs Exhibit and through Nov. 3 with Headstones, Hearses and Heartaches: A Mourning Customs Exhibit

The Sam Davis Home, 1399 Sam Davis Rd., in Smyrna, will be prepared for a funeral with mirrors draped in black cloth and clocks stopped at the time of death during A House in Mourning: Expression of Mourning Customs in the 19th Century from Oct. 8-Nov. 2.

Barfield Baptist Church holds a Trunk or Treat from 5:30-8 p.m. Halloween in the church parking lot, 1033 Barfield Church Rd.

There will be goodies for ghosts and goblins from the trunks of cars.

Florence Baptist Church is holding a Trunk or Treat from 6-8 p.m. Halloween, where candy, games, hot dogs, popcorn and drinks will be available.

The Family Worship Center offers the annual production of “Judgment” with performances at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Halloween.

“Judgment: Death Row” is this year’s theme and is not recommended for children under 10.

Spooky Theater

The Tennessee Theater Company is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the popular local theatrical production The Bell Witch Story with the show’s return through Halloween at the Theatre at Patterson Park.

“The Bell Witch Story” is a supernatural thriller based on actual events that took place in Adams, Tennessee from 1817 to 1821, in which a spirit tormented John Bell and his family, leaving him in a terrifying fight against the vengeful ghost to save his children and his own life.

The play is based on eyewitness accounts from Richard Bell’s manuscript “Our Family Trouble” and Charles Bailey Bell’s book “The Bell Witch of Tennessee,” as experienced by hundreds of people including Andrew Jackson.

The play will be staged at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday will be performed at Patterson Theatre Doors open 30 minutes before each show.

At the door, tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $10 for students.

The MTSU Opera department presents three performances of the Stephen Sondheim stage musical, Sweeney Todd, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and again at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Hinton Music Hall of the Wright Music Building on the MTSU campus.

Sweeney Todd, the demon Barber of Fleet Street is based on the 1973 play of the same name by Christopher Bond, is about a vengeful man who tries to murder as many people as he can. Together with Mrs. Lovett they successfully sell the victims in meat pies.

Afterween

Come celebrate Afterween from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Rockvale Elementary School sponsored by Beautiful Gate Community Church.

Enjoy a 35-foot Titanic Slide, 50-foot Obstacle course, inflatables, food, candy and games.

Embassy Suites Conference Center Grand Opening

Celebrate the official Grand Opening of the Embassy Suites Conference Center off the Medical Center Parkway at 5 p.m. Saturday.

The evening featrues fine dining and dancing to support the children's literacy of Rutherford County.

The First Ladies of each Rutherford County municipality will be honored along with State Rep. John Hood for his six terms of service as the 48th District representative in the Tennessee General Assembly.

Candle Wishes Benefit

Pi Sigma Epsilon, a professional business fraternity of Middle Tennessee State University, sponosrs a local charity event at 5 p.m. Saturday at Belle Aire Baptist Church.

The event is a monthly production of Candle Wishes, a local, nonprofit group dedicated to recognizing the birthdays of underprivileged children in the area.

The charity’s founder and Executive Director Jenny Williams is herself an alumnus of Middle Tennessee State University.

In addition to physically and financially supporting the event itself, the local business fraternity will also be sponsoring the birthdays of five of the children.

Members of Pi Sigma Epsilon plan to have games and activities for the children. The group intends to provide a positive experience for them that they will remember.

Division I Tennessee State Marching Band Competition

Riverdale High School Band and Band Boosters hold the 31st annual Division I Tennessee State Marching Band Competition all day Saturday at Riverdale High School’s Tomahawk Stadium.

The all-day event is designed specifically for marching bands with a student enrollment of less than 500 in grades 9-12 from all over the state of Tennessee.

School Nutrition Association Craft Fair

The Rutherford County School Nutrition Association will sponsor its first fall craft fair from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at Blackman High School.

The association raises money each year and offers college scholarships for students interested in studying a nutrition-related field.

The craft fair is open to the public and will be a great source for finding Christmas gifts, food and more.
