Ghosts and goblins will invade Patterson Park's pool Friday night.
Heart Walk
The annual Rutherford County Heart Walk will be held Sunday, starting in The Grove at MTSU with signup starting at 1 p.m. and the actual 3K walk at 2:30 p.m.
 
The goal for this year is $110,000.

MTSU baseball coach Steve Peterson, who suffered bypass surgery last season, will be the walk honoree.

MTMC will provide resources to companies to keep their employees healthy and to know how healthy they are right now, said Michael Bratton, RN, chief nursing officer at MTMC. MTMC associates can provide heart and diabetes screenings and heart healthy cooking classes at area companies.

Call Joe Hagan, marketing specialist for cardiac services at MTMC, at 500-6060 to schedule a screening.

Companies can find more information and sign up for Start! and the Start! Heart Walk at www.rutherfordheartwalk.org.

The Web site also with www.startwalkingnow.org provides resources to company leaders on how their company can become a Start! Fit-Friendly Company from tips on how to get employees walking to eating healthy in the workplace.

The Start! Web site, which can be accessed at www.rutherfordheartwalk.org, allows employees to start online walking plans and tract their progress.

Halloween Haunts

Murfreesboro Parks & Rec Department presents Spooky Splash! from 6-10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16 at the Patterson Park Community Center pool.

The evening includes an open swim, craft time, pizza and a pudding surprise.

Make sure you are ready to find what might be hidden in the pudding and come prepared to leave your hand print in the sinking sand ... just be sure to not get trapped.

Oaklands Historic House Museum holds Widows, Weepers, and Wakes: Mourning Customs Exhibit throughout the month.

Long Hunter State Park Pow Wow
More than 4,000 American Indians from more than 30 tribes will symbolically reclaim their ancestral hunting grounds, now known as Long Hunter State Park, this weekend.

Tribes will gather at the 28th annual Pow Wow on Friday through Sunday to experience history, through the awesome dancing, story-telling and  hand-made crafts.

New Frontiers BBQ Battle

New Frontiers, a nonprofit for at-risk teen boys, holds its inaugural BBQ Battle and Family Fun Day from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 at Barfield Crescent Park.

The event begins with the BBQ Battle 5k Run with special guest Kim Bindel of 94FM The FISH Morning Show starting the race.

The BBQ Battle Backyard BBQ will begin at 10 a.m. for teams of BBQ-ers, with judging occurring shortly after noon.

During the day, local youth groups will compete against each other in the Hobo Cook-off, as will local pastors. For the Kids Q, groups of kids will compete with others in their age group in two different food categories. Other activities, such as adventure games, music, crafts and the Cruise-in will go on throughout the day until 4 p.m.

Admission is free into the park, fees do apply to participate in the 5K Run, BBQ Battle, Hobo Cook off and Kids Q Contest.

Murfreesboro Little Theater presents the classic, The Diary of Anne Frank, from Oct. 16 through 25.

Eliza Doolittle takes the stage again this weekend at the Arts Center of Cannon County at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 Sunday afternoon in My Fair Lady.

2nd or None: A Celebration of Liberty
The patriotic program, 2nd or None: A Celebration of Liberty, is intended to encourage and support those who are working to preserve and protect gun rights. The event is scheduled for 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Outpost Armory.

Local, state and national leaders from all sides of the political aisle are scheduled to attend and speak about preserving the 2nd Amendment.

In addition to patriotic music and speeches, children will be treated to inflatable slides and jumps, a petting zoo, face painting and a climbing wall.

Food will also be available. The Rutherford County Volunteer Fire Department will have an engine and some of its equipment on site for viewing and for safety.

Tennessee Walk Now for Autism
Walk Now for Autism is a family-friendly event so bring the whole family along from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday to the Nashville Super Speedway outside of Lebanon on State Route 840.

The walk day is a festival that celebrates all of the work that each walker accomplishes prior to walk day to raise awareness & funds for autism research.

There are activities for the children, resources for families, light refreshments and entertainment.

Smokey Mountain Reining & Volunteer Breeders Classic
Precision and execution are the elements that a reining horse exhibitor strives for each time they enter the ring. 

And that’s exactly what you’ll find at the Smokey Mountain Reining & Volunteer Breeders Classic starting at 8 a.m. Saturday morning and running through Sunday afternoon at the Tennessee Miller Coliseum.

Reining is judged on the athletic ability of the horse and the rider's ability to perform various maneuvers.
