Soul of a People: Writing America’s Story
Linebaugh Public Library System holds a special program about the Federal Writers’ Project and Depression-era antiques at 6 p.m. Friday at the Patterson Park Community Center Theatre.

The program will include:
- A screening of excerpts from Soul of a People: Writing America’s Story, a new television documentary about the Federal Writers’ Project. Soul of a People will be broadcast later this year on the Smithsonian Channel HD.

- A discussion of the impact and legacy of the Federal Writers’ Project, led by Dr. Kristine McCusker, history professor at MTSU.

- One-on-one evaluations of Depression-era antiques, conducted by C.B. Arnette, former owner of Arnette Antique Galleries, and Greg Tidwell, co-owner of Bell Jewelers.

Audience members are invited to bring small items from the 1920s or 1930s, such as pieces of Depression glass, kitchen or household items, small toys, or jewelry for evaluation.

Following the evaluation, McCusker will lead a discussion about the role of the Federal Writers’ Project during the Great Depression and its lasting legacy.

Panel discuss on American slavery
MTSU’s history department and public history program will serve as hosts for this year's Distinguished Public Historian, Dr. Spencer Crew, who will lead a panel discussion at 7 p.m. May 29 in the main courtroom on the second floor of the Rutherford County Courthouse.

"American Slavery and Its Impact on Universities, Past and Present" will be the topic of the free and open discussion, which—in addition to guest historian Crew—will include Jim Campbell (Stanford University), Alfred Brophy (UNC-Chapel Hill) and Carroll Van West (MTSU).

Additionally, a reception for Crew and the participating historians will be held for just prior to the Friday panel, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at The Heritage Center, 225 W. College St., in downtown Murfreesboro.

Center for the Arts
Saturday is A Grand Day with the Arts at the Center for the Arts for grandparents and grandchildren.

The art gallery into a medieval castle that the kids can decorate and walk in.

Children will also be making crowns and shields with family crests and look at paintings with princesses, knights, and other legendary figures.

Costumes are welcomed. Call 904-2787 to make your reservation and ensure enough supplies. Admission is $5 per child and adult (child must be accompanied)

The Gallery at the Center for the Arts, 110 West College St., presents artistic creations by Boys and Girls Club members.

And is your in the mood for more art, visit the Arts Center of Cannon County, where Salvatore Palazzolo’s artwork is on display in the Marly Berger Gallery.

Palazzolo is a lively 100-year-old Detroit native who grew-up in San Francisco and attended Stanford University and the San Francisco School of Art and Watercolors under well know Carmel, California artist Stanley Wood.

Officer Benefit Bass Tourney
Percy Priest Lodge # 85 of the Fraternal Order of Police holds the second annual Officer Benefit Bass Tournament from 6 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.

Boats will launch from the Fate Sanders Marina.

Early registration was May 16 at the La Vergne Police Department. There is a late registration fee of $5 the day of the event.

Gardening Class at Linebaugh
Linebaugh Library wants to cultivate more green thumbs in Rutherford County.

Gardeners new and old can learn more about plants, gardening, insects and other do-it-yourself nature activities by attending Linebaugh Public Library’s free Plant and Nature classes.
 
Classes are held on the last Saturday of each month. The next class will be held 10-11 a.m. Saturday in the Reading Room on the second floor, when Keith Miller will discuss brambles, stonefruit, and berries.

Teachers Celebrate Schools Out at The Vine
Friday is the last day of school and teachers will have a chance to celebrate at The Vine.

In honor of teachers, The Vine will hold a School’s Out Party for Teachers from 7-11 p.m. Friday, May 29 at 118 W. Vine St. in downtown Murfreesboro.

Free admission, free bar bites and live entertainment. Park free in the Plaza’s underground garage at section “M” which exits onto Vine Street.

Stones River National Battlefield
Rangers at Stones River National Battlefield will give living history demonstrations, like Living Under the Guns where visitors will learn about war on the homefront in Murfreesboro through the story of one its residents.

Rangers will also present A Soldiers Story on Friday and Monday, and A Ride Through History: A Caravan Tour of Stones River National Battlefield on Saturday.

Horse Show
Tennessee Miller Coliseum presents the Tennessee Dressage Horse Show Friday and Saturday.
