Weekend Planner: May 28-31

Healing Field
The Flags of Remembrance Healing Field returns Memorial Day weekend to the field next to Belk in The Avenue.

The Healing Field is an event to raise awareness and funds for the on-going charitable services provided by the Murfreesboro Noon Exchange Club.

The Murfreesboro Noon Exchange Club brought the flag memorial last year and the healing will again be available starting with the opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 29 and continuing through an emotional close with Taps at sunset on Memorial Day, May 31.

Each flag will fly in honor of an American who sacrificed his or her time, talents and, in some cases, made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

The “flags of Remembrance Healing Field” is free of charge and open to the public daily.

For more information or to sponsor a flag, visit healingfield.org/murfreesboro or contact Talley at 615-641-0121 or rebecca.talley@midsouthbanking.com.

Stones River National Battlefield
At 10 a.m. Saturday May 29, local scouting groups are invited to assist in placing flags on more than 7,000 headstones in the Stones River National Cemetery.

Parking will be in the visitor center parking lot, and participants are encouraged to arrive by 9:30 a.m. Refreshments will be served after the project is over.

All Boy Scouts of America units must register at totscouting.org.

All other group  leaders should contact Park Ranger Jim Lewis at 893-9501 or jim_b_lewis@nps.gov to register their units.

After the flags are placed, the battlefield will hold a Memorial Day Service at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 30.

Visitors are invited to gather at the national cemetery rostrum to remember the sacrifices of soldiers, past and present. The event will include patriotic music, a wreath laying ceremony and a reading of the names of veterans who have passed away since last Memorial Day.

The battlefield is also taking reservations for the June 5 installment of Hallowed Ground: A Lantern Tour of Stones River National Cemetery.

Hallowed Ground is an hour-long tour through the cemetery. Visitors will learn to look beyond the stones and into the stories of men and women who felt the impact of war.

Reservations are required and must be made at 893-9501 starting at 9 a.m. Monday, May 31.
