Uncle Dave Macon Days
Considered one of America's premier summer festivals, Uncle Dave Macon Days features a weekend of fun, Southern style Friday-Sunday in Cannonsburgh Pioneer Village on Front Street.

Established to honor the memory of Uncle Dave Macon, it remains one of the very few “old-time” music and dance competitions in the country.

Uncle Dave Macon lived near Murfreesboro and is considered one of the first Grand Ole Opry superstars. In 1986, the United States House of Representatives proclaimed these competitions as the National Championships in Old-Time Banjo, Old-Time Clogging and Old-Time Buckdancing.

The winners of the prestigious Heritage Award serve as the Grand Marshals of the very unique “Motorless Parade.” A juried arts and crafts show, a historic photo exhibit, “shaped-note” singing in the country church, working blacksmith shop and impromptu jam sessions offer groups a full weekend of activities.

Tea Party Tailgate
Rutherford County’s discontent with Washington, D.C. continues with a protest against the Obama administration’s programs and mandates with a Tea Party Tailgate at 5 p.m. Friday, July 10 on the Courthouse lawn.

Local organizers have invited speakers, such as conservative talk radio host Steve Gill and Ben Cunningham, leader of the Tennessee Tax Revolt, to address the Tea Party.

Gill will address the party at 6 p.m. to be followed by Ben Cunningham, Lipscomb University history professor Dr. Tim Johnson, Tennessee Director of ParentalRights.org Dr. Eric Potter and numerous community organizers and citizens.

An open mic period is scheduled after the speakers so average citizens can voice their concerns and discontent with the federal government.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their family, friends, lawn chair as well as an American flag, and a clever sign with a direct message to our government leaders.

The non-partisan, nonprofit event follows a similar gathering in April to protest taxation and the federal government’s use of taxpayer dollars.

Movies Under the Stars
Movies Under the Stars, the city’s annual summer tradition, returns for another family-fun summer.

This week’s selection, an animated feature that goes behind the scenes of the high-octane world of competitive penguin surfing, will be screened at 8:30 p.m. at Mitchell-Neilson Primary on Friday and Hobgood Elementary on Saturday.

Bring your lawn chairs, blanket and picnic and enjoy the show. Concessions will be available.

For more information, please contact Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department at 890-5333 or e-mail recreation@murfreesborotn.gov.

Tennessee Shakespeare Festival
The Tennessee Shakespeare Festival opened its second season last month on the Webb School campus, presenting an adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet” this weekend.

For the Tennessee festival, director and MTSU alum Lane Davies changes the setting for Midsummer Night from Athens, Greece to Athens, Ga., and for Romeo and Juliet to 18th Century America.

The event is truly a festival. With performances at 8 p.m., doors open at 6 p.m. with many food vendors. Ryan’s Smoking Rotisserie is primary food vendor, but others, such as Blue Bird ice cream will be offering festival taste treats, including funnel cakes. Or a family can bring a picnic and eat on the grounds.

Festival seating, where those attending bring their own chair or blanket and sit on the grounds, goes for just $5 a seat with children under 12 free.

Premium seating under the big tent is only $10 online and $15 at the site. Ticket and other information are available at tennesseeshakespearefestival.com.

Romeo and Juliet performances are July 10-12 and 16-19. All performances start at 8 p.m.

Theater
Out Front Productions in partnership with Murfreesboro Little Theatre presents Del Shores' Daddy's Dyin'...Who's Got The Will, directed for the stage by George W. Manus, Jr.

The show runs July 10-12 and 17-19 with show times on Friday and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10.

Murfreesboro Little Theatre is located at 702 Ewing Blvd. For more information or tickets call 893-9825.

This stage version follows a dysfunctional Southern family as they squabble among themselves over the family fortune. As the title would suggest, Daddy, the patriarch of a large family in the Deep South, is reaching the end of life's journey as his health and energy slip away and he watches midget wrestling on a television that isn't even turned on.

Daddy's children have all returned to the family home, ostensibly to show their support in their father's final hours, but mainly because they're eager to know how Daddy's estate will be divided.

Tickets are available online at mltarts.com/Tickets.html.

The Arts Center of Cannon County presents the classic American musical West Side Story at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday night and 2 p.m. Sunday.

The musical chronicles the war between two teenage gangs - the Jets and the Sharks whose battle for turf and superiority provides the backdrop for the romance of two young people caught in a violent cross-cultural struggle.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students, seniors and groups, and is not included with the season pass.
