Swimathon!
Murfreesboro Parks and Rec holds the first ever Swimathon from 8 a.m. to midnight Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Patterson Park Community Center Pool.

Staff will time mile swims (33 laps in the pool) to test swimmers’ endurance and abilities.
A registration fee of $20 is required and includes a Swimathon T-shirt.

Bull Madness and concert
Bull Madness comes to the Miller Coliseum at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

The evening will feature bull riding at its best and a concert by Joe Diffie and Colin McKaig.

Ticket prices are $18 each with children 3 years old and under free.

Discovery Center
It’s the last weekend to visit Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl at Discovery Center to learn about protecting our precious Earth and its many ecosystems.

Woodland, urban and river settings encourage families to spend time together outdoors and inspire children to discover and care for the natural resources that sustain our world – our home sweet home.

Hands-on activities in each of these three areas demonstrate the importance of protecting ecosystems and highlight ways to reduce, reuse and recycle resources.

MTSU Flute Fest
The 10th annual MTSU Flute Festival, featuring guests Angeleita Floyd and Daniel Velasco, will be Saturday, Jan. 30, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. in the Wright Music Building lobby on the MTSU campus.

Floyd will work with and lead the Honors Flute Choir in concert at 10 a.m. in Hinton Hall of the WMB and teach a morning session at 9 o’clock titled "No time warm-ups warm up! (Loose lips, loaded lungs and lightning speed).”

Then, at 1 p.m. in the WMB’s Hinton Hall, guest artist Valesco, a native of Quito, Ecuador, will give a public recital.

Other flute festival events will include a High School Solo and a Junior Solo competition, as well as flute exhibits including Miles Ahead Instrument Service and Sales, with repair services available.

Guest artist Floyd has been professor of flute at the University of Northern Iowa since 1986. Most recently, she was a featured guest artist at the 2009 National Flute Association Convention in New York City, directed and gave master classes at university-level summer flute workshops.

Admission for the flute festival is $15 to register for the day as a participating flutist. The general public may register as a guest for one or all of the public concerts and public competitions for a one-time charge of $5.

Sunday Night Jazz, Art & Wine
3 Brothers Deli & Brewhouse presents Sunday Night Jazz, Art & Wine at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Word Up jazz ensemble will play and an open-mic session is scheduled after 9 p.m. Poets, spoken word, musicians, bands are welcome to come out and enjoy an evening of artistic collaborations.

3 Brothers Deli & Brewhouse is located at 223 W. Main St.

Ladybug
MTSU Theatre & Dance presents “Ladybug” by Josh Ginsburg at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday in Tucker Theatre.

Tickets are available in advance by calling 615-494-8810 or by visiting the Tucker Theatre lobby box office between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. MTSU students must obtain free tickets in person.

Tickets may also be purchased at the door prior to performance. Lobby doors open and ticket sales begin one hour prior to performance. Seating begins 30 minutes prior to performance.

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for MTSU faculty and staff and K-12 students.

Christiana Middle Athletics Pancake Breakfast
Christiana Middle’s baseball and softball teams will hold a pancake breakfast fundraiser from 7-9:30 a.m. Saturday at the O’Charley’s on Old Fort Parkway.

In addition to pancakes, eggs, sausage or bacon and a beverage will be served.
