Theater

The Center for the Arts stages The Wizard of Oz, a play based on the Classic MGM Movie, Friday through Sunday, at its location off the Historic Square.

Little Dorothy Gale of Kansas, like so many girls her age, dreams of what lies over the rainbow. One day a twister hits her farm and carries her away over the rainbow to another world.

Based on the classic 1939 MGM film, the story comes brightly to stage and invites you to join Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tinman, the Cowardly Lion and Toto as they travel the universe of Dorothy's imagination.

The Center for the Arts also offers A Grand Day with the Arts, a monthly program designed for grandparents and grandchildren (though parents often come if the grandparents are unavailable).

This month's theme is Wizard of Oz. Participants will make special crafts related to the book and spend some time admiring the illustration of this beloved book series. The program is designed for kids ages 2 to 8.

The center is located at 110 West College St., Murfreesboro.

The Arts Center of Cannon County stages The Velveteen Rabbit or How Toys Become Real at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Velveteen Rabbit is a classic children’s story written by Margery Williams that tells the tale of a boy who receives a Velveteen Rabbit for Christmas.

The classic story about a boy and his velveteen rabbit who learn what it means to love and be loved.

The Velveteen Rabbit is first production of the 2009 Young At Arts Series and is sponsored by Wild About Smiles Pediatric Dentistry. 

Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for students.

MTSU Events

Top young singers from 21 states and Beijing, China qualify to take part in prestigious Orpheus Vocal Competition concert at MTSU at 3 p.m., Sunday at Hinton Hall, Wright Music Building.

Tickets $10, discounts for seniors and children, MTSU students free.

Book signing

Debby Schriver signs copies of her book, “In the Footsteps of Champions: The University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers, the First Three Decades” at 4 p.m. Friday at Barnes & Noble Booksellers' Murfreesboro location, 2615 Medical Center Pkwy.

Schriver’s book chronicles the development of The University of Tennessee Women’s Athletics Department, capturing the enthusiasm, determination, and vision of those who created the foundations for this leading women’s athletic program. Special features include first-person stories by coaches and student-athletes from the era preceding 1976 and the three following decades.
