Taste Of Stones River
Come and sample signature dishes from the area’s finest restaurants at the third annual Taste of Stones River, benefiting the Primary Care & Hope Clinic.

With more than 40 participating restaurants, there is sure to be something to satisfy everyone’s taste buds.

Taste of Stones River is at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Avenue and will feature performances by several local bands.

A special kid’s area will include face painting, moonwalks and cotton candy. Bring the entire family out and enjoy yourself while helping your community.

NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet
Dr. Carolyn Baldwin Tucker, professor at Lipscomb University, will be guest speaker at the NAACP’s annual Freedom Fund banquet Aug. 22 at MTSU.

Tickets for the 6 p.m. event are $40 for adults and $15 for youths aged 25 and under. Deadline for ticket sales is Saturday, Aug. 15.

Tucker was a classroom teacher, principal and director of elementary schools with Metro Nashville Public Schools. In 2000, she became part of the Lipscomb University faculty and is currently serving as a visiting professor in the Graduate Education Department at Lipscomb.

After retiring from Nashville Public Schools in 1999, Tucker was elected to the Metro Nashville Council, becoming the first African American woman to be elected as an at-large member of the council.

A Chattanooga native, she received her bachelor and masters degrees from Tennessee State, the education specialist degree from the University of Tennessee and her Ph.D. degree from Peabody-Vanderbilt.

Kids' Triathalon
With the help of area sponsors and MTSU’s Center for Physical Activity and Health in Youth, organizers will be holding a “Kid’s Triathlon” this Saturday at SportsCom, with races starting at 7:15 a.m. Nearly 175 children, ages 7 to 14, will be participating in swimming, biking and running events.

Charles Apigian is race director and is also an associate professor at MTSU in the Department of Computer Information Systems.

High School Football

High School football kicks off Friday with games like Eagleville vs. Ezell-Harding, Blackman vs. Tullahoma, and Brentwood vs. LaVergne.

Eagleville plays at 7 p.m. Blackman and La Vergne square off against their opponents at 7:30 p.m.

Siegel High Band Pancake Breakfast
Siegel High School’s band will hold its seventh annual Pancake Breakfast and Silent Auction from 7-10:30 a.m. Aug. 22 in the Siegel High cafeteria.

Tickets to a Tennessee Titans game will be given away at 10 a.m. and entrants must be present to win. The band will also give a special performance at 11:15 a.m.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children 5 years and under.

Theater
The Center for the Arts, 110 W. College St., stages Big River at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.

The play is based on Mark Twain’s classic antebellum story of the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, with music and lyrics by Grammy award winner Roger Miller, and book by William Hauptman.

Take an exciting ride down the Mississippi River in this classic musical adventure with a thrilling score mixing gospel, folk, country and blues.

Tickets are $14 for adults; $12 for seniors and students; and $10 for children.

The Arts Center of Cannon County stages the musical Man Of Constant Sorrow this weekend with shows at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

From the author of “Keep on the Sunny Side: the Songs and Stories of the Carter Family”, Man of Constant Sorrow reveals the struggle of Ralph Stanley and his older brother Carter, to find an audience for their music at a time when bluegrass and mountain music were being rapidly replaced by country and rock. 

This funny and touching story contains some of the great original, classic, and traditional songs like: Man of Constant Sorrow, O Death, Rank Stranger, Amazing Grace, How Mountain Girls Can Love, White Dove, Angel Band and a host of other Stanley Brothers' songs that will have you singing' along and flat-footing in the aisles.

Rally for Recovery
The fourth annual Rally for Recovery Run and 5K Walk takes place Saturday at the beautiful new Gateway Island Park off Medical Center Parkway.

Sponsored by the Recovery Support Foundation, the fun run benefits the Rutherford and Cannon County Drug Court and helps obtain supportive housing for the participants.

Registration starts at 6:30 a.m. The run starts at 7:30 a.m. The entry fee is $30 and $15 for those under 21 years of age.

Zumbathon to benefit a local family
Zumbathon is a fund-raising event to benefit a Mufreesboro family's endeavor to adopt a beautiful special needs little girl from China.

She is almost 4 years old, blind and in need of surgery.

Zumba is the hottest new fitness craze, which is, in some ways, more like a Latin dance party than an exercise class.

The Zumbathon will be an event where anyone in the community can enjoy up to 3 hours of Zumba instruction when they make a monetary donation at the door. It will be a high-energy dance party, Latin rhythms and lots of fun and excitement.

The Zumbathon is scheduled take place from 9 a.m.-noon Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Nashville.

Stones River National Battlefield
Rangers will lead the Hallowed Ground Cemetery Tour on Saturday at the Stones River National Battlefield.

The dusk hour-long tour stops at tombstones where a re-enactors, dressed in period costume, will read the last letter to home from this deceased soldier.

Space for this free and open event is limited. Reservations are required at 615-893-9501. There is a limit of four reservations per phone call.

Comfortable walking shoes and insect repellent are recommended.
