Rockvale Middle School ribbon cutting
Rutherford County Schools officially opens the new Rockvale Middle School with and ribbon cutting and dedication from 2-3:30 Sunday afternoon.
The dedication will be held in the auditorium. An open house and refreshments will follow.
Stones River National Battlefield
Stones River National Battlefield will present a series of living history programs highlighting the bloody fighting in the Slaughter Pen on the hour from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., excluding noon Saturday and Sunday at Tour Stop No. 2 on the self-guided tour.
The programs at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. feature demonstrations of weapons used by the Union infantry.
The programs at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. include cannon firing demonstrations.
The 3 p.m. program is a demonstration that includes both infantry and artillery.
For two crucial hours during the late morning of Dec. 31, 1862, the Union divisions of Generals James Negley and Phillip Sheridan delayed the Confederate tide and allowed their army to regroup in new positions along the Nashville Pike. The cost of this fight was high for both sides, and soldiers later called the area the Slaughter Pen.
Park rangers will conduct “Hallowed Ground: A Lantern Tour of Stones River National Cemetery” from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
The program is meant to impress visitors with the cost of warfare by profiling both soldiers and civilians who lost their lives during the Civil War.
Volunteers reenact stories from letters and diaries of the period at designated gravesites while visitors walk a lantern-lit path through the cemetery.
Reservations are necessary to attend.

International Grand Championship Pleasure & Colt Walking Horse Show
International Grand Championship Pleasure & Colt Walking Horse Show continues at 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday at MTSU’s Miller Coliseum on Thompson Lane.
The weeklong event concludes Saturday, Aug. 2, with the naming of the International Lite Shod Grand Champion and Park Pleasure Grand Champion. Numerous amateur divisions are also held throughout the day.
The first International was held in 1979 and has since grown to be the second largest horse show in the nation, according to show sponsor Walking Horse Owners Association’s Web site.
Art exhibits
The Heritage Center of Murfreesboro and Rutherford County presents an exhibit of the top photographs submitted to a historic preservation contest.
Photos include a black and white close-up of an 18th century water wheel, to an art deco advertisement from the 1950s, scenes from the Smokies to the Mississippi River.

“Through My Eyes,” a photographic exhibit by David Doughty, runs in the gallery at the Center for the Arts through Aug. 15.
Doughty’s photographs include supernatural photos from the Crescent City Cemetery, landscapes, fountains and even Elvis memorabilia.
Doughty's life and photos include New Orleans, Southern California, Seattle and Tennessee.

For those in the mood for a little music, Friday Night Live features Dove Award-winner Jamie Harvill and the World Outreach Church Celebration Team from 6:30- 9:30 p.m.

Relay for Life stages a gospel concert from 5-10 p.m. Friday at the Celebration Grounds Farmer’s Market in Shelbyville.
The concert features southern, country and contemporary gospel, along with praise and worship by The Challengers, The Hamiltons and the Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church Praise Band.
Admission is free and donations will be accepted to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Concessions will be available.
