City commemorates Good Friday Tornado
Murfreesboro Parks and Recreation Department will commemorate last year’s Good Friday Tornado by placing a wayside marker on the city’s Greenway where the tornado ripped across the trail.
The event will begin at approximately 12:15 p.m. Saturday on the Thompson Lane Trailhead. The group will proceed approximately a quarter-mile to the disaster site where a 15- to 20-minute commemoration ceremony will include remarks by dignitaries and David M. Young, who has said he survived the storm by hanging on to a tree while the eye of the storm passed over him.
Pastor of the North Boulevard Church of Christ, Young is scheduled to deliver the invocation and relate details about his survival experience.
The memorial will mark the point on the Greenway where the tornado crossed the trail, wiping clean 1,776 linear feet along the Stones River Greenway and leaving what was once a beautiful forested area devastated and barren.
Oliver!
The Center for the Arts presents Oliver! directed by Cyndie Verbeten beginning Friday, April 9.
Adapted from the Charles Dickens’ book, Oliver Twist, Oliver! is about a young orphan in a large workhouse who draws a great deal of attention to himself when he asks for “more” at the dinner table. No one likes a greedy orphan, so Oliver finds himself sold to an undertaker. He runs away, and is taken in by a group of pickpockets who try to teach the innocent boy to be a thief. Eventually he escapes from the clutches of the crime ring and finds love, happiness, and a home.
Performed by a large cast of community actors, Oliver! promises to be one of this season’s highlights.
Oliver! runs Friday, April 9 through Sunday, May 2 at the Center for the Arts. Show times are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors and students, and $10 for children 12 and under. Tickets can be reserved by calling 615-904-2787 or online at www.boroarts.org.
The Center for the Arts is located at 110 W. College St., one block off the historic Murfreesboro Square.
