A Taste of the Derby
“A Taste of the Derby” guests will be treated to the musical stylings of Bellweather.

The group consists of saxophonist Josh Dunlap, guitarist Josh Philpott, bassist Adam Bond, and drummer Cory Ponder. Mixing it up with modern jazz, fusion and funk, the band will provide partygoers with the perfect blend of tunes for spring’s first great outdoor event. Locals may recognize Bellweather members from their frequent appearances at Liquid Smoke in Murfreesboro.

“A Taste of the Derby” begins at 6 p.m. Friday in the courtyard of Five Senses Restaurant, 1602 West Northfield Blvd.

Held on “Derby Eve”, the event will kick off Kentucky Derby weekend in delicious Southern style to benefit students in Rutherford County schools. Tickets are $75 each. Guests attending “A Taste of the Derby” will sample a tantalizing menu prepared by Five Senses’ Executive Chef Mitchell Murphree.

Battlefield Battle of the Bands
At 10 a.m. this Saturday, visitors at Stones River National Battlefield will get the chance to listen to music of the Civil War era.

The day will begin with the 4th annual Battle of the Bands event featuring bands from three area schools including Central Middle School and MTSU. The bands will play selected songs from the Civil War era while a ranger tells the story of a unique musical event that occurred prior to the Battle of Stones River.

On Saturday and Sunday, Stones River National Battlefield will present a series of living history programs that will help visitors learn how soldiers and civilians lived their lives in between the battles.

During most of the Civil War, months passed in between major military campaigns. For instance, nearly six months separated the Battle of Stones River and the Tullahoma Campaign. During those relatively quiet times, soldiers and civilians filled their days with activities that had as much or more impact on the war’s outcome as the fighting.

Join park rangers and volunteers for a weekend of programs that will shed on light on those day-to-day activities.

For more information on the weekend-long program, call the visitor center at 615-893-9501 or visit the park's Web site.

Theatre
Is He Dead? will be performed onstage at The Arts Center of Cannon County, April 23 through May 8.

Season 2010 continues at The Arts Center of Cannon County with the Mid-State’s premiere of Mark Twain’s rediscovered comedy Is He Dead? At the show’s center is a fictional, farcical tale about Jean-Frances Millet, a brilliant, but impoverished and unrecognized painter. Since Jean-François can’t sell a landscape to save his life (literally), his inner circle of friends convince him that faking his death is just the ticket for raising his stock. As the riotous scheme unfolds, Jean-François disappears from life and re-emerges as his imaginary twin sister. The expected antics and complications ensue.

The performance schedule for all shows is Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Ticket prices are $10 and may be purchased by calling the Arts Center box office at 615-563-(ARTS) 2787 or 1-800-235-9073. A $2 discount for students, seniors or groups over 10 is valid for all performances.

Tickets may also be purchased online at www.artscenterofcc.com. The Arts Center Cafe is now open before all performances, so be sure and call in advance for our discounted dinner/show packages.

The Center for the Arts presents Oliver! directed by Cyndie Verbeten beginning Friday, April 9.

Adapted from the Charles Dickens’ book, Oliver Twist, Oliver! is about a young orphan in a large workhouse who draws a great deal of attention to himself when he asks for “more” at the dinner table. No one likes a greedy orphan, so Oliver finds himself sold to an undertaker. He runs away, and is taken in by a group of pickpockets who try to teach the innocent boy to be a thief. Eventually he escapes from the clutches of the crime ring and finds love, happiness, and a home.

Oliver! runs Friday, April 9 through Sunday, May 2 at the Center for the Arts. Show times are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors and students, and $10 for children 12 and under. Tickets can be reserved by calling 615-904-2787 or online at www.boroarts.org.

The Center for the Arts is located at 110 W. College St., one block off the historic Murfreesboro Square.
