| Two brothers were charged with multiple counts of robbery and kidnapping while one was additionally charged with assaulting three booking deputies during a weekend crime spree, sheriff’s deputies said.
Detective Richard Brinkley charged Damian Woods, 18, and his brother, Donnovan, 19, both of 163 Rebel Road in Smyrna, Sunday with aggravated robbery at gunpoint.
They were accused of robbing victim Corey Fritz of Windwood Drive near Smyrna Saturday night. Fritz suffered was bound, pistol-whipped and kicked. They were charged with robbing Tyler Mosley who was parked outside. They were also charged with five counts of aggravated kidnapping.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Chris Kauffman, who commands the sheriff’s Felony Apprehension Search Tactical Team, said the pair hid in an apartment attic until FAST team officers and Murfreesboro Police’s Special Operations Team officers used chemical agents to force them out.
While in booking at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center, Booking Lt. Chris Beach accused Damian Woods of assaulting Deputies Charles Owens, Aubrey Taylor and Travis McGee.
Owens suffered repeated blows to the head, a small cut on his face, a cut inside his mouth and an injury to his left arm. Emergency Medical Services paramedics treated Owens before transporting him to Middle Tennessee Medical Center where he was treated and released.
Damian Woods was also charged with three counts of assault on three booking deputies.
Deputy Eddy Burns reported the brothers’ allegedly robbed Fritz of a computer, 9mm handgun, a Droid phone, $200 cash and marijuana about 8:40 pm. Saturday. Mosley was parked outside the house when several men armed with guns robbed him of his money and cell phone.
“Mosley also advised me that one of the suspects choked him and put a gun into his neck,” Burns reported.
Seth Watson, Kayla Nicholson, Jordan Hall and Susanna Ingram were present during the robberies.
The suspects fled from the robbery scene but Sgt. Trent Givens located them about 2:30 a.m. Sunday on Rutherford Boulevard near MTSU. Givens pursued them to Rutherford Woodland Apartments on Rutherford Boulevard where the brothers holed up in an attic of the L Building.
Kauffman said FAST and SOU officers responded to the apartment. Donnovan Woods fell through the ceiling about 15 minutes later and was taken into custody.
Sgt. Derek Oeser tried to negotiate with Damian Woods to surrender but received no response. Murfreesboro Police Officer Trey Mansfield ordered Damian Woods to come out of the attic or his K-9, T.K. Diesel, would be released but Woods did not respond.
Officers evacuated the building and deployed gas into the building but Woods still refused to surrender, Kauffman said.
Sgt. Chris Owens lobbed another chemical into the attic, forcing Woods to surrender about 5:51 a.m. Sunday.
Kauffman said Woods’ apprehension was achieved by a joint effort between Murfreesboro Police and the sheriff’s office.
“It allowed us to get them off the street,” Kauffman said.
Once in booking, Beach said Owens asked Donnovan Woods to move to another cell. When Donnovan Woods refused to enter another cell, Owens and Fann went to escort him. Damian Woods, who was on the telephone behind the deputies, began to assault Owens and Fann from behind. McGee and Taylor came to the deputies’ assistance.
“Damian turned on McGee and knocked him to the floor,” Beach said. “Deputy Owens went to assist McGee and pushed Damian off McGee. Deputy Fann maintained control of Donnovan because Deputy Taylor was somewhat dazed due to being hit in the head.
“Once Deputy Taylor regained his composure, he rejoined the fray,” Beach said, adding he used chemical spray to subdue Damian Woods.
Taylor was struck from behind on the right side of his head near the base of his skull and neck, the lieutenant said. McGee suffered bruises from being knocked to the floor and a possible sprained foot. Fann was not injured.
Nurses checked both Damian and Donnovan Woods who were ordered to be placed in segregation.
“The booking and detention deputies involved in the attack by these violent inmates relied on their training and performed excellently to bring the situation under control,” Beach said. “Although there were some minor injuries, the situation could have been much worse if not for the outstanding performance of RCSO deputies.”
Owens, Taylor and McGee obtained warrants charging Damian Woods with assault on an officer.
“I’m proud of them,” Beach said. “They did a good job, even being injured. They managed to get the situation under control. Rutherford County should be proud to have them protecting and serving them.” |
