Wearing a seat belt probably would have made a difference in saving the life of a Jackson driver who died after being involved in a one-vehicle crash Thursday on Interstate 24, a state trooper said.
Driver Terance L. Chaney, 26, died of his injuries after being flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, said Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Justin Boyd.
Witnesses told Boyd Chaney drove a Jeep Cherokee on traffic and swerved to miss a vehicle in front of him between the Almaville Road and Sam Ridley Parkway exits.
“When he swerved, the vehicle started flipping,” Boyd said. “It appears right now he just lost control of the vehicle.”
Wearing a seat belt would have made a difference, the trooper reported.
Chaney, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected onto the interstate when the Jeep flipped over, Boyd said. Wearing a seat belt would have kept him inside the vehicle where the passenger compartment remained mostly intact. He was alone.
Paramedics took Chaney to StoneCrest Medical Center before he flew to Vanderbilt.
Chaney is the 20th traffic fatality this year in Rutherford County.
