Murfreesboro Police responded to a 911 emergency call of a man armed with a handgun inside a home with several adults and two preschool children Wednesday on Old Salem Highway.

A caller notified police a suspect named Brandon was inside the residence about 3 a.m., Officer David Miller reported. He located a relative who reported a mother with two children, ages 4 and 1-1/2 were inside the home.

When no one answered repeated knocks on the door, Sgt. Mike Turner activated the Incident Response Team and the Special Operations Unit as a precaution for the safety of the people inside the home. Police learned resident Colby Herman Brandon, 20, of 723 Old Salem Highway was wanted for violation of probation on previous charges of attempted aggravated robbery and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

After three hours, Brandon opened the door and surrendered. He was taken into custody and treated at Middle Tennessee Medical Center after telling officers he took an unknown amount of pain killer medication. Miller talked with Brandon at MTMC.

“He advised that he knew that he had the outstanding warrants and that is why he would not answer the door,” Miller reported. “Brandon knew we were at the residence and advised that he surrendered because we would not leave. Brandon advised that he took the pills to get high before he went to jail.”

Brandon denied having a weapon inside the residence. Police searched the home and didn’t find a weapon inside the residence with the adults and children.

Once being released from MTMC, Brandon was booked into Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. His court hearings are set Aug. 22 and Sept. 5.
