Wal-mart honors 'Boro emergency personnel | Walmart, tornado, police

Senior manager of public for Wal-Mart in Tennessee Dennis Alpert, Walmart store manager Steve Phillips, Sam’s Club manager Gerrie Livingston, Red Cross health rep Shawn Moore, Red Cross development director Beth Ferguson and Walmart manager Tim Fox.
Walmart, in conjunction with Sam’s Club and Atmos Energy, hosted a cookout today for Murfreesboro-area emergency personnel in appreciation of their hard work and dedication following the tornadoes that hit Murfreesboro on April 10.

The Wal-Mart Foundation also presented the Heart of Tennessee Red Cross with $25,000 to be used for disaster relief efforts.

“We are proud to honor those men and women who gave of their time and energy in the aftermath of the recent tornadoes in Murfreesboro,” said Dennis Alpert, senior manager of public affairs and government relations for Wal-Mart in Tennessee. “The Heart of Tennessee Red Cross was very involved in providing shelter, food, blood and emotional support during that difficult time. We hope that the Wal-Mart Foundation’s donation to the Red Cross will help ensure that it has the resources to maintain an effective response to any disaster.”

The Heart of Tennessee Red Cross will use the money to help pay for the services it offered following the April 10 tornadoes and to provide financial assistance to families with immediate need.

“These dollars will go a long way in allowing us to continue to aid those who are in need as a result of the recent tornadoes,” said Greg King, chief executive director of the Heart of Tennessee Red Cross. “We are grateful to the Wal-Mart Foundation and commend its commitment to our community.”

Last year alone, the Heart of Tennessee Red Cross provided direct financial assistance and lodging to 256 local disaster victims.

“These added resources will also allow us to respond quickly should another tornado or natural disaster strike. At the same time, we still need the community to help by donating to our Disaster Relief Fund, which provides direct emergency assistance to those who need shelter, clothing and food as a result of house fires, tornadoes, floods or other disasters,” King said.
