Waitress turns into diehard Saints fan | Football, Super Bowl

Sammi Langley made herself a die-hard Saints fan after the Titans cut her favorite player. TMP/L. Marchesoni
Upset Tennessee Titans fan Sammi Langley dropped the team when they dropped former MTSU player Tyrone Calico after the 2005 season.

Langley, now 21, of Smyrna decided to find her own team. She watched the New Orleans Saints lose two games but liked the way they played. She’s never been to New Orleans but dreams to one day watch a game in person.

“I made myself a Saints fan,” the vivacious Langley said as she twirled the silver Saints’ fleur-de-lis symbol necklace she wore. “I’ve been a die-hard since then.”

Langley, a server at Coach’s Grille on Southeast Broad Street, liked the Saints so well she had the team symbol tattooed on her backside.

When asked why Langley decided to get the tattoo, manager Jonathan Mischke answered with a smile, “Alcohol.”

She actually consumed two drinks when her roommate’s boyfriend’s friend offered to do a Saints tattoo. She agreed.

“It looked horrible,” Langley said at she made a face and described the tattoo as a prison tattoo. She got it fixed Nov. 30 at Straight Edge.

“I love my tattoo,” Langley grinned impishly. “Customers love it (and ask to see it). It’s my tip maker, especially on Sunday when I wear my Saints jersey.”

She wears the jersey of her favorite player, running back Reggie Bush.

Although a Saints fan for only a few years, Langley has been a football fan all her life. Her mother started her obsession as a child by singing “Rocky Top” while watching University of Tennessee football games.

Her boyfriend, Anthony “AT” Thompkins, is a die-hard Atlanta Falcons fan who hopes the Saints will lose because he wants the Falcons to win a Super Bowl first.

During the fall season as the Saints remained undefeated, Langley became more confident the team would be Super Bowl bound.

“I think it’s destiny,” she said simply.

The Saints fan takes the abuse but loves to dish it out too.

During the playoff games, Coach’s owner Wayne Lawson wore his Dallas Cowboys jersey and joked with Langley to “take off her fake jersey.”

“I love rubbing it in their face,” Langley said, smiling about the memory of Dallas losing in the playoffs. “We definitely need a win so I can rub it in their face even more – or I’ll cry.”

She asked off work last year for Super Bowl Sunday and plans to watch the game with friends “or praying in a room the whole time.”

Langley believes the Saints’ defense needs to “hurt” Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Peyton Manning abilities and hopes defense end Dwight Freeney won’t play due to an injury. She hopes Saints safety Darren Sharper will be a playmaker against Manning, who doesn’t need a second Super Bowl win.

“We’re gonna win,” Langley vowed. “We’ve never been. Give us some slack.”

I love this young lady's spirit and her tatoo! I would love to get a tat, but it would get lost in all the wrinkles. I was an "Archie" fan,(Lord, has it been that long?) and now I am a "Peyton" fan. I hope we all just have safe fun, enjoy the game, and may the best team win!

Wonder if she will be proud to show that off to her grand kids?

I dont know why tacky comments are being made about Sammy when you dont even know her. She is a sweet young lady and loves her Saints and wanted to show it in her own way. Just because she has a tatoo doesnt make her a tramp. Go up to Coaches one day and have her for a waitress. We have got to know her by going up there every weekend and she is not only an awesome waitress but a sweet person. Dont judge a book by a cover just because you dont like what that cover looks like! Maybe if you open the book and read it you might like it! That is the problem with this world. We judge others before judging ourselves! WHO DAT SAMMY!!

I would like to say thank you for all of your negative comments about me. You DO NOT know me and this story was in the paper because OBVIOUSLY the SuperBowl was last night and it was about the Saints. I LOVE my Saints and I am VERY proud of this story. I am not classless or tasteless.... And I work in a GRILL not a bar! I will be VERY proud to show my tattoo (FYI NOT a tramp stamp) to my grand kids.... their kids.... and your kids... I would like to say Thank you to Noah2446 for knowing the real me and being about to defend me! For EVERYONE else come to Coach's to see me and I BET you will feel bad for all of these negative comments you felt like you should make! If you were worried about writing your negative comments about me on here why did you bother to click on the link... life is not long enough to waste your time hating on people that LOVE their life!

Hey guys. I know Sammi and she is a good person. Don't be so quick to say things that can be malicious and harmful. Just because you're typing anonymously on a computer on the internet and on the other side of a computer screen doesn't mean that you're allowed to attack someones character.
Be a little considerate.

What an awesome story about an outstanding young lady. But to those of you spouting the hateful remarks, you wouldn't know that would you? You don't personally know Sammi or the good works she has done for the community or the time she has donated with various organizations about town helping others. Did any of you scrub bathrooms for Katrina victims? I bet not. You don't want to know because then you would not be able to spew your smut in good conscience. You want to judge her appearance, her choice of loyalties, her profession and her character. Judge not lest you be judged!!
You are correct in so much as this is not a quote un quote news story. Big deal. So you want more gloom and doom? If so turn on the television. This is a "feel good" story which I am sure made most of the readers smile, even if they were Colts fans.
To those of you that have nothing better to do than to pass judgment on a proud young lady that is working to put herself back into college then I say SHAME ON YOU!! Yup, that is in caps, so you wouldn't miss it love. And by the way I just can't wait to see the story the newspaper runs about some of you. Oh but then I am sure very little of what you do could be considered newsworthy even if it were a "feel good" story. Nevertheless I am sure you probably will not ever see your 15 minutes of fame will you?
To Sammi - the rest of us are proud for you and your team winning the Superbowl and for standing your ground in defense of yourself. Just remember there will always be jealous people out there with nothing better to do than to talk or write "bad" about others to make themselves feel better.

Sammi- Don't let these hateful comments get to you. Your children and grandchildren will think your tat is awsome! Just keep striving to be as beautiful on the inside as you are on the outside. Congratulations on your team winning. They, and Louisana, needed and deserved it.
