Child abuse victim Josh Osborne visited a domestic violence and child abuse training class hosted by the Murfreesboro Police Department on Tuesday, Oct. 12.

Osborne spoke about his experiences and how they have impacted the way investigators look at child abuse cases as well as how his situation helped strengthen child abuse laws in Tennessee.

Osborne also met one of the first responders who initially provided him with medical attention. While working extra duty in Wilson County, Murfreesboro Firefighter and E.M.T. Doug Inglish was one of the first responders who provided on-scene assistance.

The class is comprised of 30 police officers and detectives from the Murfreesboro Police Department and agencies throughout Tennessee.

More than 5 years ago, Osborne was left chained to his bed where he was abandoned for long periods of time by his parents without food or water.

The child abuse was so severe it led to him having to have a kidney removed. Osborne later underwent a successful kidney transplant.

A jury convicted Christy Osborne and her husband, James, on charges of attempted aggravated child abuse in mid-2004.

When I read this article I was immediately saddened by the victim’s story but encouraged that he made it through such a terrible and despicable situation. It amazes me how people will treat children, especially how parents and relatives will treat their own children. I believe if a parent does not want to be a parent or is having trouble meeting the demand to be a parent they should not take that frustration or anger out on the child and/or children. The child or children did not ask to be birthed into this cruel, evil world and being mistreated and abused will only make their lives more miserable and sad to bear. Every child deserves, and I believe is entitled, to live as carefree as possible. Going to school with their peers, playing with toys, reading books, riding bikes, etc are all things every child should be able to experience. If a person has those resources available to him, he should make sure he does everything in his power to present that to as many children as possible. I truly hope law enforcement, investigators, and any other groups or authorities who are responsible for keeping the community, especially children, safe are using every bit of information from this young man’s case to prevent this from happening again. Unfortunately abuse and mistreatment will continue but if it can be prevented and one child can be saved from enduring any heartache at the hands of another it should be considered worth it.
