The Rutherford County UT / TSU Extension office will offer “Vegetable Gardening for Beginners” on Saturday, March 6.
The goal of this class is to help anyone new to vegetable gardening increase their knowledge of the basic principles and practices of home vegetable production.
Subjects to be covered will include site selection, soil preparation and fertility management; vegetable crop / plant selection, planting, transplanting, growing transplants, crop grouping and rotations; managing the garden to include insect, weed and disease control, watering, supporting plants; and finally harvesting, safe cleaning and handling of vegetables and an overview of preservation methods.
The course will begin with participant check-in from 8-8:30 a.m. Saturday, March 6 and will conclude by 5 p.m. in the Lane Agri-Park Community Center (home of the Farmer’s Market) located on the backside of the Lane Agri-Park site, located at 315 John R. Rice Blvd. Local UT and TSU Extension Agents will be the instructors.
There is a $10 per person registration fee to cover course materials and lunch.
Anyone interested is invited to register for the class. Simply pay the registration fee at the Extension office by 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 2.
