Update: New information on red light cameras

A new system of red light cameras scheduled to be in place in Murfreesboro by July 1 should help reduce injuries and property damage from traffic crashes at seven of the city’s major intersections, city officials said.

In 2007, Murfreesboro City Council approved a contract with Traffipax, Inc. to install and operate a red-light camera system that photographs vehicles that run red lights at seven intersections that have consistently shown the highest number of traffic crashes.

The system is similar to those that have improved safety in other Tennessee cities like Knoxville, Red Bank, Johnson City and Germantown, city officials say.

The cameras will be installed initially for intersections that include Northwest Broad and South Church streets, Memorial and Northfield boulevards, Northwest Broad Street at Northfield Boulevard, Old Fort Parkway at Thompson Lane, Rutherford and Mercury boulevards, South Church Street at Middle Tennessee Boulevard and Middle Tennessee Boulevard at New Salem Highway.

Construction is scheduled to begin shortly, officials say, but the project shouldn’t greatly interfere with the normal flow of traffic at the targeted intersections.

Three intersections should be in place by April 1 and the remaining four by July 1, officials announced. When the first three are fully operational, warning tickets will be issued for 30 days only. After that, payable citations will be mailed to the tag holder and no further grace periods will be recognized.

The civil citations will not affect either driving records or vehicle insurance rates, officials say. Tickets will only be issued to vehicle registration tags that clearly violate the stop bar at the beginning of each intersection after the signal turns red and an officer will have reviewed the infraction to ensure the citation is warranted.

Once the citation has been issued and received in the mail by the tag holder, officials said, he or she can either pay the fine outright or view the infraction at special kiosks in city facilities and contest its validity before the city judge.

An extensive public awareness campaign is being organized that will include extensive coverage on Cable Channel 3 and the city’s web site at www.murfreesborotn.gov along with various other media outlets in addition to sending press releases to area newspapers.

Minnesota Supreme court ruled they are unconstitutional in their state.

There are other alternatives:

Sounds cool to me. I see to many people continue thru all those intersections after the light is red. I have also seen several wrecks due to the same. Maybe if they could add and electrical shock to the vehicle that runs the lights it would be more effective. Or maybe shoot the car with some bright paint spelling out the words "red light bandito" it might help.

Why is anyone against this? I guess they fear they will get many citations?

BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING!

I'm with you Trvlace-why would anyone be against a system that catches people BREAKING THE LAW?????

People complain if officers-to enforce THE LAW-stand on street corners writing tickets by saying "don't the police have anything else better to do?", and yet still complain when an alternative is found to free up said officers.

I can't equate something like this to 'big brother' since driving through major intersections that are arguably some of the busiest in the county is hardly private-something that is done just between you and your car.

Would anyone complain if they caught drunk drivers? How about if you were in a wreck and it proved you were in the right?

I have no problem with it. I see so many people (especially on left turn arrows) running RED lights (not yellow, not orange), and it always makes me mad. Lots of people think the laws apply to everyone but them, which is dangerous and annoying.

In lots of other countries, no one honors the traffic lights and traffic is horrendous as a result. I'd hate to see the U.S. go that route.

I agree also, they should be put up in a lot of other intersections as well. I guarantee the number of accidents would go down. Now, while I'm at it, if there was some way to keep people from pulling all the way up to within an inch of your rearend at a stop light! I've always stopped with plenty of space between me and the vehicle in front of me. Isn't this one of the questions in the driver's manual when you take your test? I believe you're supposed to be able to see the back tires of the vehicle in front of you. Back off boneheads!

I'm sure I speak for those who have some place to be, myself included. When a light turns green...GO! It is the most frustrating thing to be five cars back in line to turn and not get a chance because the people in front of you take so damn long to get moving, resulting in two or three people running the red light. With these cameras in place, PLEASE be curtious. If you are in front of a line of cars at a stoplight, GO when the light turns green and go quickly so some people behind you have the same luxury. Thanks.

This is the Mayors and Council's answer to increasing the Police Force and citizen safety. The article fails to mention that the majorty of revenue generated from the violations will go back to the contractor.

"Why does anyone have a problem with this?" Everyone should have a problem with this because it is a violation of our Constitution. Let me ask you, when and officer pulls you over, is he giving a citation for the car or the driver? In this instance he must be giving a ticket to the car unless the driver is clearly identifiable. It is all about due process and notice. Bigger problem...from what I understand this company's revenue is based upon a percentage of the citations given. What do you think would happen in this town if every officer were given that same benefit? That is why you should have a problem with it. I hate red light runners as much as the next guy, but the Mayor and City council need to walk the walk and hire more qualified officers and make their benefits better so they will stay in Murfreesboro. Right now Smyrna offers better salary and benefits to their officers with smaller revenues. That's shameful!

Anonymous-I'm not quite sure if I totally agree with your statement. Yes, of course pay attention at the light, but to immediately take off when the light turns green can be dangerous. I rather wait through another light knowing that maybe a couple of cars ahead of me, someone avoided being hit and killed by a red-light-runner by actually pausing for just a moment before taking off. Like you said in your statement, it is a luxury to get to go when you think you deserve the chance to, but I know I won't gun it and risk my or my family's safety it when it turns green so that five cars back some person I don't even know can get to the mall 2 minutes sooner. (Not directed at you, it's just an example... :-).

TimeforJustice-I could be wrong on this, but at one time I believe I have read that the reason you don't get an actual traffic citation or have it go against your insurance or driving record is because they can't identify the driver. Don't know if that helps....

If you haven't noticed, there is already a time delay of maybe a couple seconds between when the yellow goes off and when the red light comes on just for the purpose of preventing a wreck. But then if you know about it you may realize you have extra time and incentive to run the light.
The BOZOs that sit at the light long after it has turned green are usually fiddling with their CD player or have a cell phone stuck in their ear.

A special spray paint is available that claims to render your tag unreadable by a traffic camera. I dunno if it works but I'll be visiting my local parts store to see. A friend of mine wants to know.

By: anonymous on 1/16/08
Thank you "rndnrnd". At least one person in this city understands how to drive!!! :)

By: etech30 on 1/17/08
rndnrnd-Yeah, I understand about the people who sit there after it's turned green and are still dialing a phone number or whatever. What I am refering to is once the light turns green, take a quick look around to see if anyone is coming-oftentimes I have noticed that wrecks have been avoided due to someone's quick check of oncoming traffic.

I understand there is a delay, but it's that delay that people who run the lights take advantage of in the first place, knowing that have that extra time to run the light, thus rendering it almost useless.

Now, if we can get people to stop at the white stop line instead of going up to a car length in front of it. That makes it hard to make a turn in front of them. From what I observed the majority of people who violate this stop line are either on a phone or smoking - lost in their own world.
Stop behind the line, it is there for safety.

My car is my car. I hope if and when I am ever issued a ticket my car can pay. The funny part is going to see what "council member" gets out of paying their tickets. The other question is "how much are the tickets to be?"

I think the reason it does not go on your drivers license record is because there is not a drivers license number attached to your tag. Every year when I buy tags I feel like I am paying a ticket. I'd like to know more about the emmissons testing that works on Rutherford County Cars and somehow this keeps the emmissions from Bedford and Coffee County Cars out of this community. It is called "Tax and Spend". Are we having fun yet?

I'll admit it. I "accidentally" ran the same red light twice in two months. How could I do that? The lights are confusing even to a very careful driver as myself.

The intersection of Memorial Blvd. and Medical Center Pkwy. Heading down MC Pkwy towards Memorial Blvd., four lights. The right two stay green about a minute longer to allow a few more cars to go straight ahead. The two left turn ones suddenly turn red.

It's stupid. All four lights should change together. Especially doesn't make any sense to first cut short -- the left turn lanes -- which are two busier ones with more cars waiting to enter Memorial Blvd. as opposed to the few heading straight across to Jones Blvd.

Needless to say, after the second time my heart rate rose and my prayers to thank God for sparing mine and my children's lives, I avoid that intersection now.
