Update: MTSU student accused of paying rent with marijuana proceeds: police | pot, marijuana, gun, college student

Cash, a pistol and marijuana were seized from student.
An MTSU student paid her rent with proceeds from alleged drug sales while two day care teachers apparently accepted a package with more than 26 pounds of marijuana, a Murfreesboro vice supervisor said.

Student Anna Mooney, 20, of 826 N. Spring St. Apartment C was charged with felony possession of marijuana after vice detectives and crime suppression unit officers confiscated 174.9 grams of hydroponic marijuana from her apartment, said Vice Detective Lt. Nathan McDaniel.

During the investigation, Mooney told police she "found out I could pay my rent with it," McDaniel said. Hydroponic marijuana sells for about $400 per ounce.

Detectives learned about Mooney through a CrimeStoppers tip. They watched her home several days before talking to her. McDaniel, Sgt. Cary Gensemer and Officer Jacoby O'Gwynn approached Mooney who denied selling drugs.

She gave consent to search her apartment, McDaniel said. The officers seized about six ounces of marijuana grown in water without soil, $1,542 cash and a .32-caliber handgun. She was also charged with possession of a handgun.

Mooney is unemployed. Her hearing is set July 18 in General Sessions Court.

In another case, Stephanie Johnson-Wade, 22, and Jamese "Mimi" Waters, 19, both of D63 Rosewood Apartments on 1606 N. Tennessee Blvd. were charged with felony possession of more than 10 pounds of marijuana and conspiracy to deliver and sell marijuana.

Johnson-Wade is a teacher at Stones River Day School while Waters is a day care teacher at Creative Learning.

Detectives were contacted about the suspicious package. Murf, the K-9 trained to sniff out narcotics, indicated illegal drugs in the box. Working with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration and the U.S. Postal Service, a federal search warrant was obtained to search the box.

"We opened the box and found a big block of marijuana that weighed 26.3 pounds," McDaniel said.

After the marijuana was delivered, detectives obtained a search warrant for the apartment. Both women were arrested. Their hearings were set May 15 in General Sessions Court.
