A Smyrna man suffered severe injuries when he apparently lit a cigarette near his oxygen tank, which ignited and burned him Wednesday at his home, a sheriff’s deputy reported.

Douglas Steele McKay Sr., 63, of Withers Avenue was admitted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Deputy Trey Nunley reported.

Center spokeswoman Ashley Culver reported McKay was listed in stable condition Thursday.

Because of the severity of McKay’s condition, Nunley drove the ambulance while paramedics treated him en route to StoneCrest Medical Center in Smyrna.

Nunley returned to the home where he found a small single mattress on the back porch with burn marks. He talked to Almaville volunteer firefighters who found the mattress and burned oxygen supply tank tubing when responding to the fire.

Could this be the one situation where we are justified in asking, "Are you just stupid?"

The Article said he smoked while his O2 was nearby. They didn't say it was turned on. And by the way, fire will not make O2 explode like many believe. Pure Oxygen enhances the fire but does not burn.

Many a COPD patient smokes WHILE on their oxygen-- it is the nature of the addiction. And once they reach the age of Seniority, is is really difficult to quit.

One would think a responsible Pulmanologist would assist their patients with the patch, or chantix, or the gum to prevent accidents such as these.

Why do you think he was on oxygen in the first place.

Don't know about the other quit smoking options, but I heard Chantix will REALLY make you do crazy things, and it doesn't sound like he needs to add to his problems.....
