Firefighters battle a blaze that claimed a man's life Monday on Double Springs Road.
Family members desperately tried to save a 49-year-old man from his burning house but were unable to rescue him about 7:45 a.m. Monday on Double Springs Road home, sheriff’s detectives said.
Michael Bingham of 722 Double Springs Road died in the fire, said Detective Randy Groce. His wife, Kim, suffered smoke inhalation when she, a cousin and friend tried to save him but couldn’t pull him through the back door.
“Fire just forced them back,” Groce said. “She just kept trying to get him.”
Their two children also survived.
“They’re emotionally distraught,” Groce said.
Detective Sgt. Dan Goodwin said the wife was taken to Middle Tennessee Medical Center for treatment.
An autopsy at the state medical examiner’s office is expected to determine cause of death, Goodwin said.
Bingham had been employed by the Housing Authority since 2005 as a maintenance mechanic.
“Michael was respected and loved by all of his friends and fellow employees here at the housing authority and will be greatly missed,” said Pat Noland, Executive Director. “Our hearts go out to Michael's family for their tragic loss.”
A fund has been set up to benefit the family at MidSouth Bank in Murfreesboro. Please make all monetary donations at any branch of MidSouth Bank. Donations of other items to benefit the family may be brought to the main office of the Murfreesboro Housing Authority at 415 N. Maple Street, Murfreesboro.
Volunteer firefighters from Kittrell, Rutherford, Southeast Rutherford and Lascassas fire departments battled the blaze, which is still an active fire.
Groce, Murfreesboro Assistant Fire Marshal Carl Peas and the state fire marshal’s office are investigating the cause of the fire. They have a preliminary finding but are waiting for test results.
“We know there’s no indication of a suspicious fire,” Groce said.
