The city of Murfreesboro received 12 bids yesterday for construction companies to build the new Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center, confirmed Deputy City Manager Rob Lyons.
Bid were accepted until 2 p.m. Tuesday for the approximately 31,047-square-foot building to be built off Medical Center Parkway near the Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference Center.
The apparent low bidder is Southland Constructors of Brentwood, Lyons said. Their bid was in the amount of $5,194,000.
The visitors center will be paid for in part by a $3.3 million Tennessee Department of Transportation grant to the city and a $2 million grant for the Chamber portion.
Mona Herring, vice president of the Convention and Visitors Bureau has said the first floor of the building will be a visitors center, gift shop, reception area and the Convention and Visitors Bureau. The second floor will be devoted to the Small Business Development Center and lease space. The third floor will be Chamber offices and meeting rooms.
“The project architect will review the bids and contractor qualifications,” Lyons said. “Since this project includes TDOT funding, we are required to obtain TDOT’s approval of the bid award before sending it to City Council.
“TDOT approval is estimated to take approximately 30 days. The Chamber Board will also need to take action on the bids.”
Construction could begin around late August/early September, Lyons said.
“The architect estimates that construction will take approximately 14 months, which means we are looking at a Fall 2010 move-in,” he said.
