It’s time to put down the iPhone, log off the computer and take the time to read a good book this week.
Read to Succeed is sponsoring the third annual Unplug! And Read, offering Rutherford County several opportunities for reading-based activities at a variety of places this week.
“It is important for everyone to take time to unplug and read, for parents in particular to model good behavior for their children,” said Ronni Shaw, Read to Succeed executive director.
See the Top 10 Reasons to Unplug! And Read here.
The main purpose for Unplug! And Read is to show people the importance of reading and offer alternatives to computers, iPods and T.V.
Our lives are often very busy and technology can help us, but it causes us to speed up, too, Shaw said.
The kickoff of events will take place at The Discovery Center in Murfreesboro with a reading session featuring Curious George today from 2-4 p.m.
On Monday, the Discovery Center is going to offer a presidential themed reading event aimed at teaching attendees about a famous president for the holiday.
“Make memories with your children and grandchildren by unplugging the television and other electronic devices and reading with them,” said Sandra Pineault, program manager for Read To Succeed.
“We hope that people will be reminded of the importance of reading by making the decision to unplug and read.”
Several other events are scheduled around the county through the week and a complete listing of events can be found here, at www.readtosucceed.org or by contacting Sandra Pineault at 615-631-3688. |
