With only four weeks left in its 2009 campaign, the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties needs more support from the community.

“We have about four weeks to get a million dollars,” said Meagan Flippin, marketing director for the organization.

Sixteen weeks into the 20 week campaign the United Way is only 64 percent of its way to its goal of $2.8 million. The campaign has raised more than $1.7 million so far and the campaign ends Jan. 31.

Flippin said the charity to charities is still waiting on corporate matches from local campaigns and a handful of campaigns that started late, but she would like to see the community step in and open their pockets.

“It only takes a little from each of us to make this work,” United Way President Brian Hercules said. “Research shows if every home in Rutherford and Cannon counties contributed $50 a year, less than a dollar a week, we would be able to support all the counties’ needs.”

Since 1956, the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties has worked to improve the community by supporting 45 partner agencies that focus on four key areas – education, health, income and rebuilding lives.

Last year the United Way provided services to almost 93,000 people in Rutherford and Cannon counties through partner agencies and its own initiatives.

“With local businesses and the community working together as a team, our ability to impact the community gets greater and greater,” Hercules said.

He reminded it’s not too late for individuals to contribute any amount.

And for the particularly generous there are two different initiatives, Flippin said.

The “Over the Top Club” is available for individuals who donate $100 or more, businesses that donate $250 or more to the campaign and companies that exceed their campaign totals from last year.

For their generosity, “Over the Top” donors will be featured throughout the year in a full-page advertisement in the Daily News Journal.

“It’s a thank you for new or additional pledges that push the United Way over the top to their goal,” Flippin said.

Also, individuals who donate $300 at one time, or $6 a week for a year by payroll deduction, will be entered to win a Ford Focus or Chevrolet Aveo from Murfreesboro’s Alexander Automall.

Donations can be made at uwrutherford.org, mailed to P.O. Box 330056 Murfreesboro, Tenn. 37133, or at the United Way’s office in the First Bank Building on Memorial Boulevard.
