Brian Hercules just wants to make a difference in Rutherford County.

That’s why the 29-year executive with Atmos Energy stepped down from his post in the private sector Tuesday to become the new president and chief executive officer of the United Way of Rutherford and Cannon Counties.

“It was just one of those deals where I’d reached a point in my life where I wanted to make a difference in my community,” he said.

Hercules takes over after the August resignation of Rachel Holder, who left United Way to spend more time with her family.

“Brian has so much passion and commitment for the mission of United Way that he’ll energize the board, staff and community a great deal,” said Chuck Lewis, United Way board chairman and city president of First Bank. “Brian’s work ethic, networking, and team building skills will be a winning combination for United Way and the communities we serve.”

Hercules said his short-term goals are evaluating the status of the organization to formulate long-term goals and keeping the community involved and up-to-date on the current fundraising campaign.

In the long run, he wants to grow the campaign more.

“It’s not just the money but continuing to meet the needs of the community through our partner agencies,” he said.

Hercules has the experience to do just that.

“Brian has extensive experience in working with United Way chapters and their agencies, and I am confident he will do a fantastic job,” said Stephanie Brackman, chairman of the search committee who unanimously appointed Hercules.

He was previously a board member with the United Way in Georgia and worked here as chairman of last year’s Herculean fundraising campaign, which raised more than $2.7 million in pledges.

The United Way and its 45 partner agencies and programs are working to advance the common good in Rutherford and Cannon counties by focusing on the building blocks for a meaningful life: Education, Income and Health.
