UFM begins again with a ‘Second Hour’

The Unitarian Fellowship of Murfreesboro begins its 47th year of service to Middle Tennessee with a new series of experimental programs called “Second Hour.”

“Starting Oct. 11, the group will meet for regular service from 10-11 a.m., at the Murfreesboro Center for the Arts beginning 30 minutes earlier than usual,” UFM Chairwoman Jill Austin said.

“Second Hour” programs, which feature various small discussion and activity gatherings, enabling members and guests to choose and participate in any number of life enrichment groups, will start after the 11 a.m. break, she explained

October 11
• Service: Special guest, Nashville author David Dark. His topic: "The Sacredness of Questioning Everything.”

• Adult Life Enrichment - Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up? A Look at the Christian Gospels (Led by UFM Chaplain, Ken Johnson)

• Women’s Covenant Group (Led by UFM member, Dr. Ida Fadzillah)

• Talk Back: “The Sacredness of Questioning Everything,” (Led by David Dark.)

October 18
• Service: Special guest speaker, author, religious leader Rabbi Rami Shapiro. His topic: "Celebrating Doubt, Uncertainty, and the Grace of Not Knowing."

• Adult Life Enrichment - Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up? A Look at the Christian Gospels (Led by UFM Chaplain, Ken Johnson)

• Making Origami Cranes -- Origami Cranes have become a symbol of world peace. Paper cranes are made and donated to members and friends who are ill to wish them peace. (Led by UFM member, Jennifer Roberts)

• Talk Back: “Celebrating Doubt, Uncertainty, and the Grace of Not Knowing,” (Led by Rabbi Rami Shapiro)

October 25
• Service: Special guest, singer/song writer, former Fundamentalist Minister, Frank Midgely. His topic: “My Journey from Fundamentalism to Unitarianism: Now Shall How I Live?”

• Adult Life Enrichment - Will the Real Jesus Please Stand Up? A Look at the Christian Gospels (Led by UFM Chaplain, Ken Johnson)

• Shamhain – This is a celebration that marks the beginning of winter and the Celtic New Year. The holiday is celebrated in the western world on Oct. 31 and November 1 as Halloween or All Souls Day. (Led by UFM member, Jeffrey Bowles)

Talk Back: “My Journey from Fundamentalism to Unitarianism: Now Shall How I Live?” (Led by Frank Midgely.)

“This is just an experiment on our part,” Austin said. “If the Fellowship enjoys ‘Second Hour,’ we’ll vote to continue it and make it a part of our regular Sunday service.”
