The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a national program honoring outstanding young volunteers and sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), today named Tennessee’s top two youth volunteers of 2012:
State Honoree, High School – Hannah Wright, 18, of Murfreesboro State Honoree, Middle Level – Hannah Huth, 14, of Brentwood
These State Honorees, along with the top two youth volunteers from every other state and the District of Columbia, will each receive $1,000, engraved silver medallions and will be honored from May 5-8 in Washington, D.C.
The program also honored the following Tennessee students for their volunteer service:
Distinguished Finalist – Laura Bean, 18, of Murfreesboro Distinguished Finalist – Stavoula Christopoulos, 17, of Knoxville Distinguished Finalist – Callie Deanda, 15, of Sevierville Distinguished Finalist – Caroline Hawkins, 17, of Nashville Distinguished Finalist – Lauren Kelley, 12, of Nashville Distinguished Finalist – Miana Mahaffey, 16, of South Pittsburg
About the two State Honorees:
Hannah Wright, a senior at Middle Tennessee Christian School, worked with a friend to raise $65,000 to keep a children’s home in Brazil from closing its doors and forcing its young residents back onto the streets.
Hannah Huth, an eighth-grader at Harpeth Hall School, has raised more than $12,000 for the children’s hospital where she was once a patient and for a Christian-based counseling center for kids by making and selling headbands and ponytail holders. |
