It was a tragic Labor Day weekend in Rutherford County with two local residents drowning over the holiday weekend.
Smyrna High School senior Matthew Grissom, 18, drowned Monday near the Walter Hill Dam on the Stones River.
Randy White with Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services said Grissom was swimming with friends when he became trapped in the underwater hydraulics of the dam. The group of friends were swimming without lifejackets or other floatation devices.
White said alcohol was not involved in the incident.
Earlier in the weekend, Harvie Butler, 39, of La Vergne, died after a boat accident at Four Corners Marina just inside Davidson County.
The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency recovered Butler's body Monday morning from Percy Priest Lake.
WGNS reported Butler, who was not wearing a life jacket, was thrown from the boat upon impact. Of the four others hurt, one was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with a head injury. The others were treated for non-life threatening injuries.
