Troubles at Campus School | Campus School,Schools,RCS,Court,Chontel Brigdeman,Tracy Pack
On July 27, Homer Pittard Campus School Principal Chontel Bridgeman was deposed as part of a lawsuit in Rutherford Chancery Court brought by plaintiff Tracy Pack, a former Campus School parent.

The lawsuit accuses the Rutherford County Board of Education of withholding public documents concerning Bridgeman, including missing checks, altered checks, altered sign-out sheets, and files kept on Pack’s son by Bridgeman.

The Post initially covered the case Sunday, Aug. 7, and has since obtained transcripts of the deposition.

Bridgeman was deposed by Pack’s attorney, Theodore W. Goodman, with several attorneys for the defense present including Angel McCloud, attorney for Rutherford County Schools, Quentin White representing Bridgeman personally, and Jeff Reed, from County Attorney Jim Cope’s law firm.

Throughout the deposition, Bridgeman had trouble recalling details of her employment and actions as principal at Campus School.

When asked how long she had worked for the Board of Education, she could not be sure.

“Oh, OK. This is summertime so I’m having to – my brain is a little slow. Let’s see. I was at – oh, gosh – I was at Christiana Middle for four years, Cedar Grove for one year, so that’s five, six, seven - seven years, I think. It should be seven years,” she said.

Goodman later asked where copies of checks provided to Pack had come from, including signed blank checks marked “VOID” with signatures obliterated upon reproduction, and who had made the copies. Bridgeman initially answered repeatedly and emphatically that the bank had made the copies, but Goodman pointed out that signed voided blank checks are not customarily turned in to the bank and therefore could not have been available for the bank to make copies.

Bridgeman then suddenly recalled that it could have been someone in the Accounting Department that had made the copies, but she was not sure.

“I didn’t make a copy,” she added.

When asked whether signing blank checks is standard procedure at Campus School, Bridgeman responded “How is that a big deal?”

She added purchase orders were required to have an accompanying check number, and if a purchase order was not fulfilled then the accompanying check would then be voided.

She said copies of the voided purchase orders were required to be kept on file. When asked to produce the purchase orders, she said she did not know where they were or if they still existed.

Stolen laptop

The lawsuit also involves computer data files sought by Pack that resided on Bridgeman’s school laptop.

The files have not been produced.

During the deposition, Bridgeman claimed the laptop had been stolen at a teacher retreat on the Vanderbilt campus after she left it behind.

Goodman asked whether Bridgeman had then called or communicated with anyone concerning the theft. Bridgeman answered she had only called the building on Vanderbilt campus, where she thought it had been left, but nothing was found by the staff.

Goodman asked which building it was.

“I don’t recall,” she answered.

However, Bridgeman later said in an interview she did not report the stolen laptop to police, the Board, or the County Inventory Department because “it wasn’t stolen, per say.”

“I shouldn’t say it was stolen,” she said. “It could have been left behind.”

County Attorney Jeff Reed said there is “no Board of Education requirement for employees to report stolen property.”

Bridgeman explained in the deposition the laptop was bought by the Campus School Parent-Teacher Club, so she didn’t think Rutherford County Schools officials needed to be notified.

Unanswered questions

Reed and Bridgeman’s attorney, Quentin White, instructed Bridgeman not to answer many of the questions during the deposition.

Typically, attorneys may object to questioning during a deposition, but their client must still answer. It is then left to the judge in the matter to either include or exclude that answer during court proceedings.

However, Bridgeman simply did not answer the questions and both Reed and White many times did not provide reasons for their objections.

Several attempts to reach Bridgeman’s attorney, Quentin White, have been unsuccessful.

Even more unusual is the fact that the deposition included several unprompted interjections by Board attorney Angel McCloud, who abruptly answered several questions directed at Bridgeman. McCloud attended the proceedings, but was not being deposed. She was listed in court documents as “also present”.

Pack’s attorney, Theodore W. Goodman, has since filed a motion to compel Bridgeman to answer the questions by court order.

A hearing before Chancellor Robert Corlew III is scheduled Monday, Aug. 22.

Jeff Reed, the attorney representing the Board of Education in the matter, said he is looking forward to a court resolution.

“We look forward to being able to provide whatever documents the court determines, and having the court provide a clear cost structure for redaction and production of those documents,” Reed added.

The Post will continue to follow the lawsuit.

Important journalism....thanks.

By: WeRconcerned on 8/21/11
All news is important jounralism. Much thanks to the Post for a willingness to cover this story as the DNJ has not been, for whatever reason.

There are many, many of us concerned parents who feel that things have not been done appropriately by the administration for the past couple of years at Campus School. Many people and careers have been hurt.

Hopefully, the truth can come out at this and other legal proceedings so that Campus can get the good leadership it deserves and had previously. The students there deserve no less.

Appreciation also goes to Dr. Tracy Pack for being willing to stand up to injustice and misconduct. It takes a strong person to do so and many of us recognize you as such.

These court dates, however, are not only for justice for Dr. Pack. They are also for the students, teachers and parents affiliated with Campus School, esp those who were ill-treated and left or forced out; who simply want Campus to again be a great school under leadership with integrity.

By: Just.me on 8/21/11
Excellent journalism from The Post! It's about time Murfreesboro had a newspaper not afraid to report the truth. I sure hope you stay with this and keep us informed. I think there are a lot of people that want to see that justice is served and ALL of those involved at Campus School that have mistreated so many are held accountable. Thank you Murfreesboro Post!

Love it! Professional journalism - how refreshing.

By: Clueless on 8/21/11
After reading the deposition...it is clear who the bully player has been. Way to go Dr. Pack for spending your money and the county's money standing up to it. Since so many questions were opposed by the defense due to being "personal".....could another suit be filed outside the public records suit to teach the principal one and final lesson on bulling? Ethical leadership is needed not only in the schools, but also within the community....thanks Dr. Pack for being that example...for revealing, exposing, and standing for right in the face of wrong. Character is an issue exceeding the bounds of color! Go Pack and thanks M'boro post for making available what so many don't know and need to know.

By: Clueless on 8/21/11
"muchadoaboutnothing" where are you now?

By: Just.me on 8/21/11
I couldn't agree more, Clueless. The " true bully" in this matter has become crystal clear and her owns words prove it. I found the deposition to be very enlightening. My mother used to always say, "The truth will always come easily, but a liar will never be able to remember all of the lies she's told!" oh, so true!

By: Culpepper on 8/21/11
If bridgeman said one thing in a deposition and then told the paper a different story in an interview, as the article says, does that mean she lied under oath? Isn't that illegal?

By: bulldog3 on 8/21/11
I think we know where this is headed. Ms. Bridgeman's days with the Rutherford County school system are numbered. She goes this week, or next month, or the system backs away from her next year. She has proven herself a poor steward of county property, a questionable financial manager, and an arrogant, arbitrary public servant. Now she has short term memory problems.

I think that it is time to concentrate our energies on her replacement. We need someone with a proven record of uniting teachers, students, parents, and the extended Campus School community. We need a person like Shields Templeton!

By: mborodude on 8/22/11
Just read the entire deposition......this Principal NEEDS TO BE FIRED !!!!!! Good Job Tracy and your Attorney !!!!

By: missymomof4 on 8/22/11
Glad to see something happening with Bridgeman. Maybe someone needs to check in to her teaching years with Murfreesboro City Schools back about 19 years or so ago. She was Chontel Grimes at that time. My complaints to Principal Zane Cantrell and Joe Thompson went unheeded. Not only is she apparently dishonest, she was racist and mean to kids she didn't like. She was not a good teacher and not a nice person. She told me my child who had ADD was just plain lazy and she told me quote, "I don't know what ADD is". She harrassed him and others in his class on a daily basis. One child in his class was severely ADHD and she told another child and I quote, "Don't sit in his desk you might catch what he has" It was a school year that almost 20 years later I have not forgotten. When years later I realized she was at Christiana Middle my heart sank and first thought was she better leave my children alone. I hope finally she is seen for how she really is.

By: eagle50 on 8/22/11
Her words during the deposition sounded more like a 12th grader instead of a person with a PHD. I'm not sure why she has this job but from reading her statements, she is not qualified. I'd love to know why she had to travel to Nashville to the Board of Dentistry during her "work" hours. I don't know either party in this dispute, but can only form an opinion of some sort of retaliation against Dr. Pack.

By: Ireland on 8/22/11
Wow. That depo transcript was interesting.
I have been following this story ever since the discussion forum blowup on the DNJ. It was quickly shut down by the editor-in-chief.
I find it highly disturbing that this lady may have tried to retaliate against Dr. Pack by endangering his career.
What was this mystery letter all about that was written to the officer? That part of the story is left hanging.

@Just.me,

Point of clarification from the Post staff: muchadoaboutnothing is not registered as Jill Hollis, but another name.

By: Just.me on 8/22/11
Michelle, I could be mistaken, but I do believe you can put whatever name you want when you register.

By: MichelleWillard on 8/22/11
@Just.me,

You can, which is why I phrased it as I did.

By: Just.me on 8/22/11
Thank you...I thought so :)

By: muchadoaboutnothing on 8/22/11
@MichelleWillard...why would you even begin to disclose who is writing on this forum? If you are wondering why I have not commented it is because I read this article and now know why no one reads this paper. The professionalism (I use that term lightly) is severely lacking. It doesn't even deserve comment. I will wait until the DNJ does their article or better yet...I will find out on my own the outcome of this lawsuit. So much for taxpayers dollars...keep suing...whats another 10 grand to us hard working folk?

By: MichelleWillard on 8/22/11
@muchado,
I did not disclose who you are registered as, but who you are not. Mrs. Hollis asked me directly to clarify that you are not her, which is why I disclosed that fact.

By: boromomofthree on 8/22/11
I am very interested to know what happened today in Court. I'm sure it will be on GG eventually.

Thank you Murfreesboro Post for keeping the public informed.

As for wasting taxpayers dollars, seems like we're wasting a few bucks paying Dr. Chontel Bridgeman with doing a job she clearly seems inept at doing.

By: StationSeller on 8/22/11
I saw today's hearing. Dr. Pack's attorney was successful in ordering Dr. Bridgeman to answer all of his questions. If any of her answers are inappropriate for use in Dr. Pack's lawsuit, the county may be granted a "protective order" at a later date.

Interestingly, as far as I could tell, neither Dr. Bridgeman, nor her attorney, were present. Since those parties objected to most of Dr. Pack's questions, I thought that they would at least have the guts to fight. I guess this was all just a delay tactic. Wonder what they are so afraid to reveal to Dr. Pack?

By: gracefulgertrude on 8/22/11
Well, we were there listening. The one thing we listened for were "bells" and of course there were none. Always running the mouth and muchtodoaboutnothing in backing it up. How appropriate.

This is all I will be saying on this blog. Waiting for next Sunday's article in the POST on the events in court today.

By: MTSCCSGRAD on 8/22/11
McPhee put this woman at CS to shut the school down. How she ever go a PHd from Vanderbilt is beyond me. It doesn't speak well of their degrees! I thought she got it at Wall-mart.

By: WeRconcerned on 8/22/11
MichelleWillard- I think you probably realised today with the attack on you and the Post from "Muchado" why so many of us have been concerned for so long. She can only erupt into venomous jargon when anyone has a thought or viewpoint different from hers. She is clearly on the "side" of Chontel and her speaking for that side damages them even more. Despite her protests, many of us think she is Jill, whatever name she registered under, or poss in combination with LeAnn and / or Chontel. Whatever, with as much info as she tried to put out on the article about Campus from last week, she never put her name to it so we cannot lend credibility to what she says are "facts". Since she tends to spew out venom, it is difficult for any of us concerned about Campus to take her seriously.

I and many other concerned parents continue to be grateful to the Post for following this story. Thank you! We once had a great school at Campus, with teachers we cared for and respected and who gave their "all" into teaching our children... Chontel forced most of them away and was derogatory to many parents and caused much exodus from that school. We want the grat school back, and that cant happen until Chontel is removed, along with Jill.

Unfortunately, "needanewpatch" is possibly correct and not the first to suggest that this was an attempt for MTSU to get the building of Campus by destroying from within. Just go back and read very early entries of concerns on www.gracefulgertrude.com if interested.

Having now read the deposition, I am even more concerned about Campus students than ever. Chontel was so evasive, there is apparently plenty for her to hide. She left behind a laptop purchased by PTC? We are supposed to believe that? Like we arent supposed to believe she wasnt "brainpwr" on those awful DNJ posts?

I agree with bulldog3- we need a uniter not a divider to ever solve this problem. We want our great Campus School back before it is too late!

By: needanewpatch on 8/22/11
Who am I? Just a parent who’s children have experienced going to some of the other elementary and middle schools in this county as well as Campus School. Please allow me to point out why I thought Campus was one of this county’s most valuable possessions. It was a place where my children were given the opportunity to have a hands-on learning experience. As opposed to the usual, “Class read the chapters and take the test on Friday.” Bleh bleh bleh... I believe there is a difference between actually learning something and spending weeks and weeks prepping kids to color in circles with a #2 pencil for TCAP. My belief is that if students are motivated rather than being put to sleep they are more apt to be successful comprehending their lessons and applying the knowledge gained.

I am not a close friend of Dr. Pack, in fact, if he were to walk up to me today I wouldn’t know him unless he introduced himself.
I am not someone who was born and raised in Rutherford county, therefore I am not anyone you might refer too as “one of the good ole boys.” I am what most who are anybody in this town would refer to as a nobody. I am just a middle class parent who’s children were students of the wonderful teachers at Campus school who are now on both sides of this issue which has been brewing for far too long. I registered my kids on that list when they were little just like everyone else and was fortunate to get a call inviting my kids to go to Campus School.

In the past 18 months, I have had many questions, which I have toyed with and would like to share with anyone who may have some answers for me.

Mr. Gill this one is blowing up in your face and the spectators in Rutherford county are watching this all go down. The ball was in your possession and you fumbled it on the one. Is this an innocent oversight of yours or did you bet on the game?
What was the length of the contract with MTSU?
By the seventh year, will there be anyone left at Campus School?
How convenient, is the timing coincidental or is it just me?

In 2005-2006 the ultimatum of (Plan A) then was thought to be an unobtainable challenge to protect the schools address at East Lytle Street. What Mr Gill, Dr. McPhee and others didn’t count on was the determination of some good people who decided to roll up their sleeves and say, “We will find away.”

There are other question which concerns me more:
Was there a Plan B?

What would be a way to solve the problem of constantly getting flack from people about tax payer moneys being spent on a small school who some thought to be a waste, and yet, still be perceived as an advocate for those who worked relentless hours raising a lot of money and “devoting” (no pun intended) their time to campaigning to save Campus School, fund raising and anything it took to keep the school where it was instead of uprooted and moved to Reeves Rogers?

I would submit a good way to do this would be to hire someone to do the dirty work for them. (Plan B) The building may look shiny and bright now, but all the Comit, Lysol and bleach in the world couldn’t clean or disinfect the dirty work and the “data” that’s taken place within that school the last couple of years. Something definitely smells bad over there. No need for more renovation to satisfy code. No need to pay for a bulldozer. Not when you can destroy it from the inside. Right?

Funny how one question just leads to another.

My kids loved it there. It’s a shame what you have done to this institution.

By: Clueless on 8/22/11
@ needanewpatch very interesting!
@ muchadoaboutnothing....sounds like sour grapes again. You looked good at court today! Only happy you showed publicly what so many of us have known for awhile.
@ weRconcerned...agreed! and ditto on everything!

Again, thanks to Dr. Pack for spending his hard earned money pursuing this case...thanks from the taxpayer who regrettable pays for two horrible, vindictive, unethical, bullies who sit in HPCS's office! Exposing this publicly is priceless!

By: CasualObserver on 8/22/11
@muchadoaboutnothing just a small piece of advice from a casual observer..... Never pick a fight with someone who buys ink by the barrel.....particularly when you are an employee of the RCBOE, and your email and internet activity are subject to a public records request.

By: adquoddamnum on 8/22/11
From the looks of things it is time for Harry Gill and Dr McPhee to cut ties and run from this Principal. I read the deposition and it seems like the attorney's are defending a criminal client instead of a witness in a civil trial. We may never know what all Dr Bridgeman has done while a employee of Rutherford County but it is time to end her employment based on the actions we do know.

By: Titanfan1 on 8/23/11
In my opinion, personnel decisions are the toughest to make within an organization. The window of opportunity has now closed to make these tough decisions without RCBOE appearing to be at fault. This has been going on too long.

By: WeRconcerned on 8/23/11
"Character is how you behave when you beleive that no one is watching, how you speak when you think no one is listening, and how you treat others that are less powerful than you."

This is the quote listed on Bridgeman's page on the Campus School website. She appears to have violated all three parts. If so, what does that show us about her character? Better yet, what does that show Harry Gill and the RCBOE? Do they care? And the biggest question of all: How could this lack of character affect the students and teachers at CS? We know what damage it has done in the past...

By: CandaceWilson on 8/23/11
Finally, some of the facts are coming out. I sent a letter to Mr. Gill with details of both financial and non-financial facts that he should be aware of. I also told him that I had turned the financial information over to the state comptrollers office. I have sent met with both his Finance Director who I felt attempted to make light of some of the issues. There is more. Please contact me via my user name if you are interested in the actual documents--you can send me an email by doing this. I'm not going to clog up the post site by re-posting this information. Great job M'boro post.

By: ClearConscience on 8/24/11
Just for the record, here is the email from Dr. Bridgeman responding to Tracy Pack's request for proof of what the PTC monies were spent on. It was said that this letter was unprofessional but you can see for yourselves that it is not.

Dr. Pack:

I thoroughly explained to parents during PTC meetings as to how monies would be/had been spent. In addition, Lisa Ball provides a report to parents regarding PTC monies at each PTC meeting. I invite you to attend these as they are very informational. I can give you the information in this email and have copied PTC Officers in the event I leave anything out regarding your request; I believe they could fill in and supply you information, also. Here is a summation:

Projector Screen and Projectors in each classroom

Intercom System

Cameras

Gym equipment

Lobby Furniture

Professional Development for teachers (Professional Learning Communities & Assessment)

Two clickers

School-wide announcement equipment

Mobile Lab (PTC paid half and RCBOE paid a little over half)

Technology Grants for teachers

*Each teacher has made individual purchases for students using funds

*Teachers Incentives include food for evening duties such as Conferences, Family Math Night, etc. They also received prizes of gift cards for writing grants and Christmas Appreciation Gifts

*Students have received a number of incentives (Birthday cupcakes, field trips, and individual/group incentives)

If you want to share with me the specific amount you have donated to HPCS this year and in what capacity, I may be able to tell you where your money went or, at least, the target area.

Dr. Bridgeman,

As an interested parent and supporter, I am requesting a list of the expenditures of PTC monies for this school year. Thanks for your assistance in this request. If you desire you can email to this address or mail a hard copy to Dr. Tracy Pack, 147 E. Clark Blvd. 37130.

Sincerely,

Tracy Pack, D.D.S.

By: orthovol on 8/24/11
ClearConscience,
I don't believe you should tell the readers how to interpret the email. They are more than able to decide for themselves. Additionally expenditure means the following (I don't see any in the email like I requested):

1. The act or process of expending; outlay.
2. a. An amount expended.
b. An expense.

Instead of supplying me with a list of expenses like I asked, an attempt was made to belittle me in the very first paragraph.
Additionally, there is one major omission from your attempt at copying and pasting the email. The original had the word "your" in italics in the sentence "If you want to share with me the specific amount you have donated to HPCS this year and in what capacity, I may be able to tell you where your money went or, at least, the target area."

Instead of responding to my specific request in a professional manner, she declined to give me any expenditures and included a few unnecessary jabs to a rather simple request. This is precisely why I described her email as unprofessional.

Also, you did not include my second request that she never responded to; therefore, I had to take my inquiry to Mr. Sandvig. He then had to contact Dr. Bridgeman to get the information that I had requested twice from her. So, she is the one who wasted your tax dollars by forcing Mr. Sandvig to use his time doing what she had a responsibility to do as the principal of a school.

Followup email that was never acknowledged:

Dr. Bridgeman,

I appreciate your response. XXX XXX (not Dr, Bridgeman)has been very helpful in printing me a copy of the treasurer's report for this school year. Her listing of all receipts and expenses is extremely detailed and helpful. After digesting all of this information my only request is a listing by expense of the $21,222.69 to HPCS for the fall festival proceeds. This is listed as an expense, but there is not a footnote to describe how this money was spent or if it is still in an account. Thanks for your help in clarifying this.

Tracy Pack

We can let the public decide who handled the situation in a professional manner now that they know the rest of the story. By the way, this is where approximately $3000 was spent at various restaurants as "incentives."
Think that may be why I did not get a detailed list of expenditures?

By: WeRconcerned on 8/25/11
Thanks Dr Pack for all your info to provide "the rest of the story". We support your cocnerns!

By: orthovol on 8/25/11
Although I have worked very hard for everything I have achieved, I do not have as much money as Rutherford County ; therefore, numerous people who have experienced the injustices at the hands of this regime (more than just one person at Campus School) have offered to help with the extreme legal bills I have encountered trying to seek the truth. I also don't hide. Everyone knows I have been on a search for the facts and the truth. The ones who committed the injustices have been fighting in many ways to hide, conceal, destroy, deny the very information they created. Getting this information is a monumental and expensive task. Fortunately, one has the right to seek public records for any reason they desire. My guess most people seek them for the very reason I have in that something very bad has been done against them by someone paid with tax dollars. Because scores of people fall into this category when it comes to this situation, I am willing to be the punching bag in order to reveal the facts.

By: gracefulgertrude on 8/25/11
Dr. Pack, come on! You know the marter role has already been taken. Jill plays that role well . . .Chontel is good at it too! I think they feed off each other. LOL! (through that in for you muchtodo!)

You are no MARTER Dr. Pack you are a fighter, fighters fight, LIERS LIE and Winners Win.

By: CasualObserver on 8/26/11
@muchado: "It has been plainly stated by the Board of Education that NOTHING has been released to these people" AND THUS THE LAWSUIT. To whom did the BOE make this statement? Perhaps this is what was told to the people working in the office at HCPS? Another example of obstructing a public records request???

By: nemesis411 on 8/26/11
Hello. I'm new on this forum, but I've been observing for a LONG time. I have no current association with Campus School. I do think it was a fine institution in the past.

I keep reading muchascaredaboutsomething's posts about protecting the privacy of children and critical information about children being leaked to the public . What about the "lost" laptop?!! That was chock full of information about children! At least it was supposed to be, since it was purchased with PTC funds. Was it ever reported "lost" to Metro Police? My guess is that you aren't concerned about that info being leaked because it's smashed to pieces in a trash bag at the landfill.

Just my observations-no rants or crazy replies necessary

By: CasualObserver on 8/26/11
The casual observer finds it interesting that the phrase "It is a choice school....correct?" is in @muchado's post, and the phrase "It still is a choice school" is in the email from Jill Hollis.....

This is the only time I have ever heard HPCS referred to as a "choice school." Does anyone else call it that? Sheer coincidence??

Things that make you go "HHHMMMM......"

By: CasualObserver on 8/26/11
The casual observer also finds the following tidbit from attorney Jeff Reed in the article above to be of interest: "County Attorney Jeff Reed said there is “no Board of Education requirement for employees to report stolen property.”

Perhaps he should read Rutherford County School Board Policy 3.205 titled "Security". It states on line 17
"The principal shall call law enforcement officials in cases involving illegal entry, theft or vandalism.
The principal or designee shall notify the director of schools within 48 hours of discovering after each case of vandalism, theft, building damage and illegal entry."

http://www.boardpolicy.net/documents/detail.asp?iFile=14536&iType=3&iBoard=74

So the question I have is how many policies were broken in this fiasco, and why doesn't anyone at the board including James Evans, Angel McCloud, and Jeff Reed know WHAT THEIR OWN POLICIES STATE??????
