One driver trapped in her burning car Wednesday pleaded unsuccessfully with witnesses to free her but the flames were too intense, a state trooper said.

Driver Rachel Wilson, 36, of Mt. Juliet died after her Ford Explorer Sport burst into flames after a crash at 10:46 p.m. on state Route 840 westbound near the Nashville SuperSpeedway, said Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Michael Cummings.

She was alone. The Explorer traveled off the highway onto the right shoulder, struck a rock wall and overturned on its roof, the trooper said. The car slid about 50 to 60 feet.

Wilson was partially ejected and trapped in the wreckage.

“A passerby attempted to get her out of the vehicle on fire” but the flames prevented her rescue, Cummings said.

Wilson wore her seat belt. An autopsy was requested for positive identification. Dental records were expected to identify her. Wilson was a member of the Tennessee Army National Guard. She is the 30th traffic fatality this year in Rutherford County.
