The race for Jim Tracy’s seat is shaping up to be an expensive one.

Tracy announced Thursday he has raised $326,245 and has $251,195.83 cash on-hand in his bid to retain his 16th District State Senate seat.

“But this campaign will not be won on dollars and cents, rather by votes of the people of Rutherford, Bedford, and Moore Counties,” Tracy said.

Tracy is uncontested in the Republican primary for the senate seat, which covers most of Rutherford County and all of Bedford and Moore counties. The Democratic challengers, Jean Ann Rogers and Dee Butler, will fight it out in the Aug. 7 primary to see who will face him in the November general election.

Since Roger’s announced her candidacy in April through the filing date of June 30, she has raised $98,696.10 and ended the period with $95,700.67 cash on-hand.

During the same reporting period, Tracy raised $56,925.

“It says that I am a good candidate that people are interested in and that people are excited in wanting to help me,” Rogers said about her fundraising efforts. “I’m very excited about it.”

Butler could not be reached for comment.

By comparison, the five candidates running for rep. John Hood’s vacated 48th district State House of Representatives seats have raised a combined total of slightly more than $53,000 in the same reporting period.

Democrats Rick Parks and Tim Tipps lead the pack, raising $15,710.00 and $16,980.00, respectively.

Republican primary candidate Lou Ann Zelenik raised $9,325 and had $27,608.19 in cash on-hand.

Yet, none of the totals compare to that raised by Tracy and Rogers, who together raised $155,621.10.

Its a shame this has to be a dollar and cents experience.
I know, money moves the world, but in politics, morals, family values, and what one believes in must take a front seat. Think of the many people out there who would be a great politician but can't run because there is "lack of funds". Wonder how much it would cost to change the system??
