Good Friday tornadoes killed two people, injured 35 and leveled more than 100 homes and businesses in Murfreesboro and 36 homes in Rutherford County, causing millions in losses, authorities said Friday.

An emergency shelter was set up at New Visions Baptist Church on North Thompson Lane. Pinnacle Banking is accepting donations for the victims.

Emergency Medical Services spokesman Randy White said the injured patients suffered chest and head injuries and minor cuts and bruises.

Murfreesboro Police spokesman Kyle Evans said the twister touched down in the Blackman community about 12:35 p.m., traveled to Gresham Lane, crossed Interstate 24 near Medical Center Parkway and damaged homes off Manson Pike, It turned north to Thompson Lane and Northwest Broad Street, damaging businesses on Thompson Lane, Evans said.

“There was significant damage to businesses on Thompson Lane,” Evans said.

The tornado traveled east through Riverview subdivision and onto Tomahawk Trail, Haynes Drive and Regency Park before turning northeast on Compton Road near Penny Lane, he said.

“Two-story homes have been leveled completely,” Evans said. “In some of the cases, we had vehicles thrown into houses.”

Emergency workers traveled house-to-house searching for survivors.

Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Dan Goodwin said he believes two to four tornadoes touched down in Rutherford County.

“We’re right in the middle of tornado alley,” Goodwin said. “I’m happy to report we don’t have any fatalities (in rural Rutherford County.)

“Three dozen houses at least have been destroyed in the county.”

County employees were off for Good Friday but came into work when they heard about the tornado.

Fugitive warrants Deputy Jack Keisling and Detective Steve Brown crawled under a collapsed home and freed people trapped inside their Lakebrook home.

Their actions were one of many acts of heroism, he noted.

“This is Good Friday,” Goodwin noted. “Prayers might be appropriate.”

Murfreesboro spokesman Chris Shofner said Murfreesboro Electric Department employees were trying to get electricity restored.

Shofner characterized the loss as a major disaster. With neighbors helping each other, the the city will get through the process.

My family owns Mayfield's Floor Covering, INC on Thompson Lane. God was watching over them today as no one inside the building was hurt. My mother didn't have time to make it to the building and somehow her car was the only car unhurt when the tornado hit. Please let your prayers be with a family that has lost a business that has not only helped so many customers but churches as well. God bless Murfreesboro, I wish I were there to help.

It would be amazing if someone could post where and how we can volunteer. Please do this. I'd love to help, but I don't know where to go.

"“This is Good Friday,” Goodwin noted. “Prayers might be appropriate.”

With two killed, 35 injured and more than 100 homes leveled, what's the point of praying to the "intelligent designer?"

Check headline "Agencies offer tornado assistance" and see the listing from United Way. The 211 system is set up for this opportunity and need.

trishee, Volunteers will be needed at Family Worship Center on Sulphur Springs Road off of Northfield to pass out water to those without homes. They also are in need of packaged foods such as snack cakes and crackers. They also need blankets. This neighborhood was pretty much leveled and the National Guard has set up a command post here. I am a church member there and we really need people to help the people in this neighborhood who have lost their homes. There is no power, so if you come at night, bring your flashlight. God bless you!

Seldom958- I suggest you take your nonsense elsewhere. With 100 homes destroyed and only two deaths I think I think there is plenty of reason to thank GOD. The were many people today who were fortunate they only sustained material losses that can be replaced.

Anything you can do to help is appreciated. We had volunteers with chain saws, back hoe, bob cats over where we were working. Donations can be sent to area churches. Items such as bottled water, clothes, canned food is needed.

My prayers are with everyone in Murfreesboro
and especially to those who lost loved ones.
May God Bless You.

Our police officers are doing a great job at monitoring the areas that were hit.
A Salute of gratitude.

I want to thank all the volunteers and emergency personnel for their dedication during this tradegy. I would also like to thank our county commissioners and mayor for the county-wide early tornado warning siren system. Wait....I guess I can't do that. At what point will our leadership realize that some things must be done even if it requries raising the property tax. Fortunately, during the events of Good Friday I was in a business that had a television set on. As I came back up 24 and realized how close the tornado's path came to The Avenue, I became ill. How many of those small shops didn't have televisons or radios on? How many shoppers might have been between stores? Our local news media does a wonderful job of getting the information out. Not everyone is tied to a radio or television. I grew up in a state west of here that is in the middle of tornado alley. The sirens were part of my life every Wendesday at noon as far back as I can remember. It is unconscionable that our elected leaders have ignored this need of our citizens. If you believe as I do that an early warning system for the entire county is necessary, please become vocal with our county commissioners. We were forutunate this time as we have been in the past. I just don't believe that we can continue to be fortunate with tornados that appear in spring, summer, fall and winter.
