Tornado damage figures reach $40.2 million

TMP Reports

Latest figures show 818 homes sustained damage with an estimated $40.2 million in costs from the EF4 Good Friday tornado, the Emergency Management Agency reported Wednesday.

About 111 of those homes completely destroyed, reported spokesman Randy White of the Emergency Management Agency.

Of the remaining homes, 290 homes have major damage and 164 have minor damage. About 235 more homes were directly affected in some way from the tornados. These estimates may be updated through the week.

Agents of FEMA’s Individual Assistance and Public Assistance Teams and the Small Business Administration are in the area doing assessments of the damage. They met Wednesday with all County and City officials to obtain preliminary estimates of the storms rescue and relief efforts. They will continue assessments for the next several days.

The City and County Solid Waste, Highway Department, and several other mutual aid departments from the area will handle trash and debris removal.

Residents are asked to put yard waste and building materials in separate piles in the right of way since the materials will be transported to two different disposal locations. The County Landfill has taken in over 4,500 tons of debris. They are weighing four trucks per minute. The Florence Road facility has taken in over 2,516 tons of trees and brush.

Contractors, all volunteers, and anyone that has a reason to be in the area will need to resister at the Rutherford County Solid Waste side of the building at 1220 West College Street before attempting to enter restricted neighborhoods. Passes will be issued from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
