To the editor:
911 Operator: “Murfreesboro 911 – What is your emergency?”
Victim: “HELP!!! HELP!!! Send an ambulance!!! My mommy was just raped and shot. We are on the Greenway.”
911 Operator: “Okay little boy, where exactly are you on the Greenway?”
Victim: “I don’t know. Is there a police call-box I can call you from so you can tell?”
911 Operator: “Unfortunately, no”
Victim: “Okay, is there a policeman on a 4-wheeler that patrols the greenway that I can flag down?”
911 Operator: “Ahhhhh, nope. We only patrol areas where there are neighbors who can witness and deter crime. We don’t patrol the miles and miles of the abandoned Greenway where no one can hear you scream.”
Victim: “Fine! Are there any security cameras I can jump in front of so you will know my location?”
911 Operator: “Nope. Sorry. Try again. Where are you?”
Victim: “So how can I get my mommy some help? I did what I was supposed to do and called you”
911 Operator: “Drag your mom to a near-by road and call from there so we can get an ambulance to you? ”
The city of Murfreesboro should compromise and only outlaw handguns in city parks by those who have not gone through the state of Tennessee’s background check and handgun carry-permit process. There are no other resources available in the city parks for individuals to defend themselves from criminals.
But I do have an idea for a new sign at every park entrance:
“Attention Criminals: The city of Murfreesboro has designated this as a resistance-free crime zone. Legal handgun carry permit holders have been disarmed. Enjoy.”
911 Operator: “Murfreesboro 911 – What is your emergency?”
Victim: “I was dragging my mom to a street when someone was walking their dog without a leash and it just snapped. The dog is attacking her now. Send help!!!”
911 Operator: “OK, little boy, where exactly are you on the Greenway now?”
Victim: “Oh, what’s the point??? Too bad mom left her gun in the car”
The state of Tennessee recognizes the need but it seems the city of Murfreesboro is only worried about the tax dollars lost by Spring Fling. Don’t be afraid of the legal carry-permit holders. Only punish those who do not carry legally. In the years that I have rode my bicycle on the Greenway, I have yet to see one single policeman on it. There are no cameras, no call boxes, and very little mile-markers identifying which part of the greenway system you are on.
You have a spare tire on your vehicle so you don’t have to buy one when you need it. You carry that tire because it is better to have it with you and not need it, than to need it and not have it with you! That is exactly why, I carry my handgun.
