Tims Ford State Park celebrates its 30th anniversary this year in grand fashion with Heritage Day, a full day of events that highlight local community history.
Park Manager Mike Robertson hopes the event will be the beginning of an expanded mission for the park.
“We want to add the history of the Elk River Valley into our programs and eventually, make an exhibit a permanent part of our new visitor’s center,” Robertson said.
A community history exhibit will be open from 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13. A history “story booth,” as well as ranger programs for kids and adults will be offered throughout the day. Music by the Tims Ford Pickers will round out the celebration at 5:30 p.m.
Since January of this year, researchers from the public history program at Middle Tennessee State University have been conducting oral-history interviews, scanning photographs and planning for the exhibit at Heritage Day.
“We hope that community residents will come out to Heritage Day, bring photographs and stories, and reunite with friends and neighbors,” said Dollie Boyd, a researcher on the project, who also is working on a master’s degree in public history at MTSU.
