A vehicle struck and injured a Tennessee Highway Patrol sergeant when he attempted to move a bale of hay from the exit lane about 1:10 p.m. Saturday at the La Vergne exit of Interstate 24, a lieutenant said.

Paramedics treated Sgt. Jim Gunn before taking him to Middle Tennessee Medical Center for treatment.

THP Lt. Clement Jarrett said Gunn was outside his cruiser moving the hay out of the lane when a motorcycle or car clipped him.

“He didn’t see what hit him,” Jarrett said. “Whatever struck him kept going.”

THP Sgt. Rick Smith said he believed a motorcycle struck Gunn.

Drivers who witnessed the hit-and-run crash or possibly have any information about the wreck were asked to call the Highway Patrol at 615-741-2060.

Gunn’s patrol car had the emergency equipment activated, Jarrett said.

Trooper Matt Perry of the THP’s Critical Incident Response Team was investigating the crash.
