THOSE DARLINS
Murfreesboro’s own Those Darlins is grabbing the music scene by its …. Well, let’s just say it is standing up and taking notice.

The trio has that right combination of cuteness, spunk and raw talent that is garnering the band media attention from coast to coast.

They recently played their biggest festival, the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester. Those Darlins’ made up of Kelley Darlin (bass), Jessi Darlin (guitar) and Nikki Darlin (baritone ukelele) put on a hell of a show — one that has matured from their drunken antics and clogging on stage of just two years ago.

Oh, and did I mention that they have all taken on the surname Darlin. Ramones anyone? Depending on who is doing the listening, Those Darlins is a little bit traditional country and a little bit punk. But essentially, they are a pop band. Kelley equates Those Darlins’ music to early rock and roll that had any influences.

“We were basically just entertaining ourselves,” Kelley said in a phone interview with The Murfreesboro Post, of the band when they first started performing together two years ago. But when the show got stagnant they just changed it up and have grown.

Those Darlins have enriched their sound by adding a drummer, their roommate. Kelley said it wasn’t just luck that launched the band’s career touring across the country, opening for The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach and playing the South by Southwest Festival. “It has been a steady amount of work,” she said. “It is still a lot of work.”

Playing Bonnaroo is an even bigger thrill for Kelley. She worked the festival, nearly in her backyard, for two years, but never imagined getting the chance to perform.

Those Darlin’s debut album is set for release June 23. They are planning a blowout release party at Nashville’s Mercy Lounge with The Black Lips June 27. The album features all original songs expect for two Carter Family tunes and Uncle Dave Macon’s “Keep My Skillet Good & Greasy” — a nod to the band’s hometown.
