A daily walk with friends on the Greenway turned into the nightmare for three local women Wednesday morning.
When Veronica King finished her daily walk, she found her SUV had been broken into, along with two other cars in the busy parking lot.
“It was pretty gutsy for them to do this right now,” King said while motioning to the half-full parking lot.
King said the thieves didn’t take a guitar she had in the back of her SUV, but instead snatched her purse. They also made off with Varity Stone’s purse and broke into another truck before making their get-a-way.
King’s friend Tammy Lillegard said the break-ins probably happened just after 8 a.m. this morning when they showed up for their daily walk. She added there were about 10 cars in the lot when the women arrived.
She sees piles of broken glass in the lot about once a month and security needs ot be beefed up in the area, she said.
“We need cameras,” Lillegard said of the secluded lot, whose view of Thompson Lane is obscured by a thick tree line.
Murfreesboro Police Department spokesman Kyle Evans said MPD has police officers stationed on the Greenway, who patrol parking areas on a regular basis.
“Most would say they feel safe when visiting our parks and greenways,” he said, adding officers patrol on foot, bicycles and even Segways.
But if you don’t feel safe, he did offer some advice for making cars lees attractive to thieves when parked in lots.
“It only takes a few seconds to break in to a car and remove items of value,” he said, so try and keep your vehicle as unattractive to thieves as possible.
Remember to lock your doors and roll your windows up completely, he said.
“Store valuables like electronics and personal information – purses and wallets – in a secure area like the trunk, where it’s not visible to people walking by,” Evans said. “If nothing of value is visible, they (thieves) are much less likely to force their way in.”
Evans said if you do see something or someone suspicious, don’t hesitate to call police with a good description and location and do not take matters into your own hands.

Well how about that. I would have never guessed that there would be more or same amount of crime on the green way since we oppted out of the carry in parks bill. I no longer go to the greenway because I do not want my car to get broken into and since I can not take my gun with me on the greenway I would have to leave it in my car and just hand it over to a crook.

People advocating allowing gun in parks aren't modern-day cowboys with itchy trigger fingers. Common garden-variety scum like this morning's perps know that our parks are gun-free zones for the majority of law-abiding citizens so they can pillage at will with no recourse and no fear of being caught. It's not a matter of wanting to shoot someone; it's the deterrent of the unknown (who's packing?) be that might keep these scum away. No one that I know with a carry permit wants to shoot anyone, ever.

“Most would say they feel safe when visiting our parks and greenways,” he said, adding officers patrol on foot, bicycles and even Segways. I use the trailway daily from Thompson to Manson Pike and have not seen a cop in 4 weeks and have never seen a segway, ever.

OK, so were there unarmed witnesses to this crime that could have taken a few thieves down had they been armed?

Guns were not mentioned in the story so why bring them up?

I run on the greenway, and all I carry is my license and debit card, which is on me the whole time in a pouch attached to a belt (that can also carry water bottles). I understand that having a vehicle without a trunk (like an SUV or small hatchback which is what I drive) makes it hard to hide a purse, so keep it at home. At most, a burglar will steal my change of clothes in my car.

The point is these are "gateway" crimes. An experiment on "what can I get away with". IT WILL ESCALATE if not detered. They have no fear of intervention due to the police being so thinly spread and easily avoided in a large park. As I stated before during the gun debate in parks (thats the connection). All the city council did was draw a target on the parks and greenways.

My daughter had her car broken into 2 weeks ago and had her purse stollen, what did the police do????? you guessed it...nothing. Is the greenway safe? my answer would be NO!!

Try walking the Greenway from Manson Pike to Cannonsburg and see how secure you feel there. Early in the morning, no police, nothing but homeless people and thugs. Oh, I forgot all the perverts hanging out at the Old Fort Park trailhead that police and the city are well aware of. When taking my kids to the park Sunday, we counted 4 homeless sleeping under trees in the park. Makes me want to keep taking my kids there.

People who are using the greenway are easy targets. You typically leave all of your valuables in your vehicle while you are exercising/walking/biking etc...The likelyhood of them being caught in the act is low an the likelyhood of them being caught by the police is even lower. Risk Vs. Benefits.

If people are well aware of the activity that goes on, stop going. You can not carry a gun, vehicles are broken into almost daily, homeless people are obviously present. Why continue the use of the greenway just to complain or become the next victim?
By: elguapo on 8/19/09
One small question. Where do you expect homeless people to sleep if not under a tree? By definition, they don't have a "home" to bed down in so a tree in a public area is one of the few options they have available.

I play golf at Old FT. twice a week and 7 out of ten times there is a Police car somewhere in the park area when I pass through. I have seen them "check out" people but if they aren't breaking the law what should the police do?

More Greenways are needed for the criminals to have something to do. Come on Bart, get us some more free money for more Greenways, and the city can add more money in the budget ( tax payer based ) for upkeep and definitely more security.
By: ItsGood on 8/19/09
bota, they are there to get speeders, not stop crime.
By: BoltAction on 8/19/09
Where are these "cops" that everyone is talking about? I go to the greenway almost every weekend and I never see one. Are they only patrolling areas closest to their favorite coffee shop? For those of you that say stop going if there's so much crime. Your tax dollars paid for the greenway system. You should be able to walk it without the fear of something happening. But since we are not allowed to defend ourselves in parks we must rely on the police, if you happen to come across one.

I have lived in the 'Boro for almost 9 years and there are always cars being broken into on the Greenway. This is nothing new. You should never have anything valuable in your car!
By: barrettbear on 8/19/09
I know what my tax dollars are used for. Crime does not exist solely at or on the greenway in Murfreesboro,Tn. Crime is everywhere, along with murder, robbery, assault, kidnapping, etc. Now we surely can not expect a police officer to be where and when the unexpected happens. Having or not having fear is not going to stop criminals from doing what that intend to do either. A person can not let fear stop them from living an ordinary day to day life. If you know what goes on at or near the greenway you go or you do not.
By: abc123 on 8/19/09
What in the world would a gun have done for these women? They weren't even present for the incident. Apparently, no one was present for the incident. So no one carrying a gun could have stopped these people. You all are idiots!!! And lets just say that someone saw it and had a gun on them and pulled the gun on the perp and the perp also had a gun and they pulled their gun and everyone started shooting, what then???? All you gun advocates make me sick!!!
By: barrettbear on 8/19/09
Agree or disagree. People speed everyday on any given stretch of road. Rather that road be city, county or state. Eventually you get caught. Having fear or not having fear does not deter a motorist to stop speeding. Even if Tennesse Highway Patrol is visible or not. I know what I posted in regards to going to the greenway. First, I am bad about abbreviations BoltAction, could you spell out the first word in your response. Second, tax dollars were used to build roads and schools that go for long periods of time without repair. The choice is drive on the road or do not drive on the road. Send our children to school with a leaky roof or do not send them to school with a leaky roof. With tax revenue being down, I do not anticipate that adequate security is top priority over at the greenway.
By: jbashley on 8/19/09
I challenge anyone to a thought experiment. If you don't believe firearms can deter crime then prove it by posting a sign in your front yard.... NO GUNS ALLOWED OR WANTED ON THIS PROPERTY!!! And by the way...good luck!!!
By: parkerq on 8/19/09
I certainly did not see the cops when a group of thugs was smoking dope uder the bridge at medical center or whena group of thugs was trhowing fire crackers at me there. By the way Bota a gun carrier can do nothing about someone breaking into a car except say "hey stop the I am calling the cops" the only time they could use thier gun is if after they say that the perp pulls a weapon on them. jbashley lol.
By: parkerq on 8/19/09
By the way my arguement for me having my gun on me at the green way was so that I did not have to leave it in my car to get stolen by someone. I live 30 mins from murfreesboro and when I want to kill time by going fishing at the greenway and have my gun in the car I cant so I have to go eat at Ocharlies where I can carry.
By: ahhhdude on 8/20/09
Just do as I do and carry your gun and don't advertise it and nobody but the surprised dead crook will know you have it.Its better to ask for forgiveness than permission. You have the right to defend yourself no matter what Bragg and his ilk say.

Bota the police are over by the golf course trying to stay out of sight till the end of their shift.
