The Post Top 10: 'Boro's most haunted places | GHOST
The most haunted sites in Rutherford County, according to ghost hunter Terry Mayo, are:

1. Stones River National Battlefield along Old Nashville Highway. Many people don't know, Mayo says, that the second most bloodiest battle in the Civil War, 26,000 Union and Confederate solders died, happened right here on 4,000 acres that make up much of Murfreesboro. The battle area referred to as the Slaughter Pen around Wilkinson Pike and Thompson Lane is the most active. Mayo estimates hundreds of solders haunt the battlefield. He has seen them appear as orbs and streaks of light.

2. Evergreen Cemetery at 519 Greenland Drive. Unfortunately, Mayo says the cemetery, established in May 1872, encompassing over 100 acres with around 25,000 graves, is locked after dusk. He says there are dozens of living souls looming around the gravesites.

3. The Beesley house, cemetery and church along Beesley Road in western Murfreesboro. Mayo says he hasn't seen the spirits of the former owners manifest themselves but they make their presence known to visitors. He says they are there protecting the property.

4. Railroad tracks at Florence Road and Broad Street in Smyrna. Mayo says a woman who was killed on the railroad tracks roams the tracks. He hasn't been able to learn much more about the incident.

5. Central Park at 521 Old Salem Road. Several ghosts haunt the former manufacturing facility, Mayo says. He doesn't know who the ghosts are but know they range from a man in his 60s, a woman in her 20s and a young boy. They aren't happy visitors in the facility that has been vacant for many years.

6. North Church Street and East Main Street. Mayo says a number of houses from the antebellum homes along East Main Street to homes that date back to the 1920s and later on North Church Street are haunted.

7. Fate Sanders Marina at 3157 Weakly Lane in Smyrna. Mayo says he knows a boy who drowned in Percy Priest Lake around the boat ago haunts the marina. The boy asks boaters if they have seen his father.

8. New Hope Church and Cemetery in southeastern Rutherford County. The pre-Civil War cemetery, Mayo says, is not only haunted but has other paranormal activity that Mayo declined to talk about.

9. Walter Hill Dam in eastern Rutherford County. Several drowning and shooting victims haunt the dam and its 16-acre park.

10. Mayo's House on North Church. Mayo knows of two men, a woman and a little boy whose spirits are left behind in his 1927 home. He and his roommates have heard the unknown ghosts talking.

11. Small cemetery at Hazen's Monument in Stones River National Battlefield. Mayo says the cemetery is extremely haunted. He has seen orbs of light and has heard the voices of Civil War soldiers there.

There's a boy who likes to play with dogs over at the Artillery Monument at the north end of Van Cleave (on the opposite side of 41-70) at SRNB. He'll call your dog in broad daylight. We suspect he may have been a flag bearer or bugler or something like that. The Slaughter Pen is also active in daylight; we've heard people whispering and horses snorting and bridles jingling. (And no, it wasn't the horses who used to live at that farm over at Van Cleave and Manson Pike.)

Also, are you sure it's a woman at the Florence Road RR tracks? There was a man who killed himself there back in the '60s at the crossing when it was next to what used to be Lamb's Restaurant.

There's an old house on North Spring that's haunted by something as well; it walks between the landing and the closet in the upstairs bedroom and rattles the mirror and doors a lot. It doesn't seem to be hostile, but animals don't like it at ALL.

What about the Crichilow House on East Main Street? Story has it there's the ghost of a little girl who loved to dance in the top floor of the house, which was a ballroom of sorts (if I recall correctly).

Does anyone know what the story is regarding New Hope Church and Cemetery? Just curious as he declined to talk about it.
